Emissions ... failed MOT

the carbon monoxide was to high.  Now i have a question for you...

the exaust on my 1.4 was small and the one on my 1.8 is exactly the same size.  So ... should the 1.4 cat fit the 1.8?   Im pretty sure the flange is the same and if not i will weld it to fit but i cant afford a cat so hope it does fit.

Could also be the lambda which makes more sence because the car backfires on over run.  But nothing is pulled up on VAG COM.  Should it? 

Any help on the matter will be usefull as i goto get it re-mot'd before the end of next week.

if lambada sensor is reading slightly out wouldnt expect it to show up a fault its more if they fail all together.like u said could be a blocked/faulty cat. new cat aint that dear from here

they not to bad but i will change the sensor anyway.  Was hoping to save as much as possible to get my back on the road by using the 1.4 cat.   but its no good if its going to restrict the flow or not have a good enough effect.

Unusual for a Cat to go unless the cars runnig rich or mega miles.

I'd go for a lambda sensor swap [a genuine part too] and see how it goes.

Have you checked all the other usual bits, air filter, breather pipes etc etc ??

Have checked the engine over recently when i gave it all a good clean up etc..

they are trying to charge me £45.00 for a bosch lambda sensor!!    £65 for the cat  which is odd as this is just a single wire sensor,  the one on my AEX engine was a 5 wire heated sensor and that was only £30.00

I'd bite the bullet and get a genuine VW bit IMO. Could be cheap from a dealer [?]  These are known to be trouble spots on poor running cars and cheapo aftermarket lambda sensors either fail quickly or don't switch quickly enough give more running issues 

I'd give a stealer dealer a bell

I cant risk it at the moment, i have Not tax and not MOT untill this is sorted and my deeler is 30 miles away.  Going to have to go for an after market one,  but its a bosch unit so shouldnt be to craply made.   Its my only choice coz i goto keep this cheeep!!!

Fair comment mate, infact chances are a genuine part may well be Bosch anyway
