Just been and bought castrol edge. I'm having to refill after 5000 miles, just out of interest is that what you guys are finding?

The official tollerance for oil consumption is "upto 1 litre of oil per 1,000 kilometers" - in english, 1 litre per 600 miles, so if you have only needed a litre after 5000miles, then that is perfectly OK.

As Komenda states, they tend to use more oil early, particularly during running in.  My RS4 used about 1½ litres every 1000miles - up to about 4k miles, and now it uses about ½ a litre per 1000 miles.  Can't really remember what the GTI was like new, but now with 20k on the clock, it probably uses about a quarter litre per 1000 miles.

Did you wait for your oil light to tell you?  If so, not really a good idea, because the oil light only tells you when the level is virtually at minimum (or in the case of my last S4, way below the min ).  Anyway, by allowing the GTI to fall to the min, being as the sump only holds 4.6 litres, you are effectively loosing upto 22% of the lubricant - which is not good.  It won't be so bad if your sump holds a larger amount - my RS holds 10 litres of Castrols finest, so if I were to let it get to the min, I'd only be loosing 10% of the lube.

So the moral of this little post, is to use your dipstick regularly!  :smug:

And no, not that one!

No the light hadnt come on, the dipstick showed a level towards the top of the 'min' section so thought i should refill. Is the refill light the yellow one on a gti? thanks for your advice

Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow LongLife III.  :smug:

Basically, it is the bulk trade range of Castrol Edge 5w30.  I buy it in 60 litre barrels.

OK, thanks.  I'd still recommend lifting the bonnet a little more frequently though!

I think the yellow one is for low oil level, whereas the red one is for low oil pressure - meaning stop the engine pronto!
