....The Mk5 Golf DSG is defined as "Automatic" - Pure and simple. It's also how the insurance companies define it.

We know it's rather more than just that, but let's not confuse their poor ignorant bureaucratic brains!

As you say you cant just risk it you could try the police they might know the actual law.
Surely the Divvey L a should have it in writing what actually constitutes auto/manual they must all be X VW dealer's

....The Police won't know - Who in the Police Service are you going to ask? They'll tell you to go and check your DVLA Registration Certificate.

I'll spell it out again - Those of you who have a DSG, get out your DVLA Registration Certificate....Section 4.D.2 Model/Type....What does it say?....

AUTO

Which is an abbreviation for Automatic.

Thanks RedRobin. I just phoned VW UK Customer Service and the bloke said he was 'pretty sure' it was classed as an auto and we'd be ok.

Good question

For the purposes of a person who drives on an automatic car UK licence a DSG will be okay. The automatic driving test discludes clutch hill holds (achieving bite point) and clutch use for the purpose of changing gears. Remember in a manual and an Auto you still have to change the stick position and so the fact that you can change gears manually doesn't matter - otherwise most auto's would fall into this category as in most standard autos you can select to hold the car in second and third, in CVT's some cars have a + and - selector. Audi's multitronic boxes also have this function too.

Yup, agreed with all the others - with specific regard to the driving licence issue, the DSG is most definately classed as an Auto.

And in simple laymans terms - the best autobox in the world.  Period.

....And also known (I think!) as S-tronic in the world of Audi.
