carbonio intake question- quickie

What's the difference between the Carbino and ebay 'carbino' intakes? Is the ebay knock-off differently shaped or made with different materials?

From what I understand the shape is very similar but the quality of the C/F isn't quite as good, but for the difference in price (even after you add on the import tax) I would still go for the ebay version IMO.

Also the ebay version is easier to fit from what I remember reading.

....I think the only difference is a sticker which reads "Carbonio"! I haven't seen a rep one in the flesh but can't imagine that the carbonfibre itself is inferior in any way and the shape looks absolutely identical.

oettinger, who are very highly respected German TUV tuners were using Carbonio's without the labels on all their S3 etc conversions but I believe that they were all manufactured by Carbonio. Afterall Carbonio own the patents!

EDIT: Well, yes, as SteveP says, the carbonfibre might well be not quite as good - CF standards do vary. But for an air intake I wouldn't think it matters too much.

....I forgot to say: As the VW servicing schedule will normally dump your air filter after so many thousand miles, you need to stop them dumping your expensive and efficient ITG filter! I've got an ITG sticker on my airbox cover as a reminder. [No pic as yet]

My Carbonio intake came with a PiperCross panel filter and someone I know with a Mk5 GTI, who is a highly qualified engineer and whose opinion I respect, told me ITG were the best. The ITG filter is certainly of very robust multilayered construction and fits the 'box' very tightly, so sealing is good - Better quality than the PiperCross which in turn is much better than the standard 'paper' panel. Extremely low maintenance was also a factor in my decision - No additional oiling is ever needed and just an occasional dust off. Also a lifetime warranty.

Don't forget that the VW standard filter gets thrown away and replaced every ?,000 miles when servicing - What does that tell you?

The ITG Pro-filter utilizes the same three layer reticulated polyester foam used on the MAXOGEN air filters. Unlike some of the competition, ITG filters have a massive dust load-up tolerance, which is the ability to absorb a large amount of dust without reducing air flow capacity. With the standard K03 turbo I wouldn't like to say that any performance gains are appreciable without proper scientific testing. However, the manufacturers claim about +2 bhp is possible.

It's also MAF-friendly! And probably more benefit to a remapped car.

If you plan on keeping your car, as I do, then it'll quickly pay for itself by not needing to replace it - 60 squid well spent imo.

....It's not a pic of the actual one I've installed, but mine is totally identical. The fit in the GTI filter box is tight but that's how we like it . I would phone MerlinSport and ask - I recall them being very helpful.

According to this web page both the Audi A3 2.0T and the GTi use the same 15WB-586 filter.
