steam coming from my overflow water tank
« on: 02 September 2008, 21:54 »
im driving a mk2 golf 1.6 driver webber conversion, i know its not a gti but its a lookalike. anyway im on here for help.
i have to fill the water up every 200ish miles, its seems to be getting out somewhere but i have checked all hoses and its a new water pump. its going low when i drive and the water is boiling and when its low coming out as steam from the overflow tank. ive had it looked at by a garage and my bro(a self taught mk2 expert) and we cant see the problem. any ideas? its not the head gasket or radiator as i have had them checked too! ive looked on the web and a few other guys have had the same problem but there is no def cause. some say its the cap on the overflow tank but ive had a good look and it seems fine.

It's worth changing the cap to a blue one just to eliminate it as a possibility, theyre not expensive

how hot does it get? does it overheat if your stuck in traffic? my dads westfield does the same thing, spits out water from the catch tank when its hot. he spent ages trying to find out what it was... then decided it was the head gasket, he still cant be arsed to fix it though, when it gets to 120oc he stops and has a pint, fills it up with some more water, and drives home. haha.

dose the fan come on when it gets hot,  fan should come before steam comes out,   and more than capable of cooling engine.  if not check fuse number 1.   also worth giveing the system a good flush if its been run without antifreeze in the past
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

had that same problem with my GTI this weekend and it was just that rubber under the expansion tank cap that was out of place, got that fixed, then the car started overheating and one of the hoses started shooting a lil bit of water and the radiator was not comin on when the car gets hot, so i turned the car off waited till it cooldown and  found out that theres was air inside my radiator so i took the top hose off of my radiator and squeezed the bottom one till water come out the top then i filled the radiator with water with the top rad hose off put some water inside the expansion tank till water comes out of the radiator top hose when you see that theres a good amount of water coming out imediately hook it on. SOLVED MY PROBLEM!!!! NO MORE OVAHEATING!!!! NO MORE BOILING TANK!!!
