yeah funily enough VW designed the cooling system to keep the engine running at the optimum temp for efficiency

for heavily modified/race spec engines a lower temp stat/switch can be usefull however, but if your car is running around half way on the temp gauge under normal conditions then there is absolutly no need :)

...and high(ish) oil temp means...?  :undecided:

assuming oil level and grade is correct?

only other things wrong are coke'd up head and oil pump on its way out.

water temp is always below half way even with oil temp at 108 in traffic

I don't think a semi will give the same results

If your concerned about cooling, I would look at an uprated fan e.g. the dual fan passat jobbys. That way the fan has got the oomph to cool things down when needed, but you've not fecked around with the system.

And I can't for the life of me see the point of an uprated thermostat... So it lets water around the radiator sooner, so what, unless I've missed the point?!  The only thing I can think of is if you thrash the car from cold or its massively tuned, you might get overheating while the standard thermostat is still opening (unlikely surely!).

uprated thermostats are a load of crap,  they don't increase the efficiency of a well maintained cooling system in any way what so ever.  all they do is keep the water in then enigne at a lower temperature the only time this chould be of use is if the enigne is really gunged up and the gunk is so stoppign heat transferring to the water as it should  but flushing the enigne is afar better solution.

enigne's are built to quite fine tolerances and as parts expand as they warm these clearances change slightly in theory to the optimal amount so an engine should run with the stat it's designed for and if extra cooling is required a bigger radiator should be used.  high performance engines tend to run hotter anyway
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

if your engine runs hot like mine then yes (sits around 100c oil temp on the motorway, up to 108 in bad traffic), but if you have no problem with it then i dont see the point. engines burn fuel better when hotter so i would expect lower mpg with the lower temp stat and fan switch... if that makes sense!

is that 'hot'?

or is it a case of 'how long is a piece of string?'

Thanks for the info guys!

Anyone used halfords coolant?
Should I avoid?
