Great - anyone got a gearbox..
« on: 02 September 2008, 19:22 »
So, not a lot more than a week of ownership, get a little whirring noise.  Was going to my mechanic to have a look over it anyway and he's confirmed the worst.  Gearbox is on it's way out!

So, couple of questions, are the 8v and 16v boxes the same?  Any recommended places to get one?  What is the box code or other identifying code?

8v and 16v are no tthe same. 8v is rod change, 16v is cable change. No idea on codes or places to get one but you should find a few VW breakers on google/yell.com

ive got one,but you would have to take it off yourself, the car had 188,000 on the clock but the gearbox was super smooth, infact it was smoother than the one ive got in my car that im using now! basically,im based in hinckley, leicestershire and the car is being scrapped really soon,so if you can get down to take it then you can have it for £30.cheers.

Sorry - I meant to say - mine is a 16v, so need a 16v one, and as much info about swapping it as possible!

I took a gearbox and clutch out of a 306 gti once.  Was a right pig of a job and had to pay someone to put it back..  Any experiences of swapping the box out of a 16v would be appreciated.

Think I'll get a Haynes manual and see what's involved too..

Just a word of caution. I bought a mk3 gti box off this site and despite asking about the likely faults, particularly reverse gear idler, discovered it was only fit for scrap after fitting. After numerous emails I was given my money back. I remain £130 out of pocket, 200 mile round trip to collect it and due to a shoulder injury I paid £100 to have it fitted. If possible drive the car its coming out of.

OK, found a 2nd hand box less than 25 miles away, with a months warranty for £100 (cheers veedubclub )

Just got to decide if I'm going to DIY fit it, pay a garage I trust to fit it, or get someone to fit it on the cheap now!
