New Brake Master Cylinder

Hi folks,

           i'm feeling rather guilty here. This is my first post and i'm already asking for help. :embarassed: Anyway, i just bought a 91 MK2 Gti. With the understanding it needed a new brake master cylinder. This was no problem and wouldn't be that expensive to replace. So i bought a  Delphi Lockheed master cylinder and proceeded to fit it. Stupid me i didn't notice that it requires two plugs for the opposite side of the hard pipes! I've scoured the net hi and low and can't find these anywhere :cry: If anyone knows where i could pick these up please let me know. Again, sorry for not going through the new members forum thread. I kinda wanted to wait till i got the car going, so i could experience the thrill of the GTI first.

ahh you mean the two plastic grommets that go in the other side of the brake cylinder to blank the sockets off. err, i would have thought they would have come with the cylinder? this kindof thing normally does...I had a look around for some with no luck.

Your old master cylinder should have steel blanks in it.

If not you're off to VAG to get new blanks.

I just got one from gsf   and i bought two brass blank screws aswell to block these off.  they were a squid each.      Handy thread by the way....   Ive just fitted my new cylinder and the car needs to go a mile an a half down the road for a full system fill and bleed..  Sounds sketchy i know but its a quiet road and im gunna handbrake my way there, is it ok to pressurise the servo with next to no fluid in the system? or would it be a better idea to disconnect the vacuum hose? just dont wanna break anything else!  im not worried about bones! :grin:

Just fill it up with fluid and pump it through with the compensator valve open.  Work through the nipples closest to the master first.

Even if you still have a bit of air in the system it would be better than what you're suggesting.

Driving it on the road with no fluid would be bloody stupid and incredibly dangerous.  Imagine if you hit a pedestrian on the way?  You won't be covered by your insurance and you'll get sued for a LOT and payments may well last decades.

bleed nipples fit the holes for want of a better solution (the larger ones)

Thanks for all the replies and help folks. I'm off to VAG tomorrow to pick up a new tailgate lock anyway so i'll ask when i'm there. I thought the blanks would've come with the master cylinder as well but when i asked my supplier he'd never even heard what i was talking about! Knows his stuff eh?? :shocked:
I had a scout on fleabay but the only bleed nipples i could find were off a Harley Davidson!
Afghan Shocks, I think Diamond Hell is right. Don't take the chance. If you hurt someone or get pulled by the plod you're in serious trouble!

An alternative is a scrapyard - should have something with the appropriate blanks in there.

 Sorry was alf asleep and was having a dense moment!   Kwik fit shouldnt be allowed to touch brakes...  "you have to close the compensator valve" i said... "No you dont" they said,  did they work? they they f**k!  "now do it with it shut" i said,  "wont make a difference, you fitted the cylinder incorrectly" they said... do my brakes now work,  Yup!

Kwik Fit!!!! I've had really bad experiences with them! Went in for pads once and they wanted to renew my whole braking system! And they wouldn't do the pads unless i bought all the stuff from them! :evil:

Not got many scrappies near me, most of the stuff they have is like 1.0ltr Renault 5's and the likes. I'll make a few phone calls though!

The Master Cylinder that's on my car at the mo has only two tapped holes for the hard pipes to fit in. Originally for a rhd only. The one i bought must be a sort of generic one. Had toyed with the idea of bolts and ball bearing but quickly dismissed this due to the fact that this is a braking system! :undecided:
