inside edges down to zero tread !!!.
« on: 01 September 2008, 15:35 »
After carrying out perp work for the 1st MOT, noticed both front Dunlop Sport tyres (original to car) have worn on the inside edges down to zero tread.. ikes !   Rest of tyre tread is about 3mm.

Rear tyres are 5mm.
Car has 21k miles on clock.
Drives 100% with no steering wobble of obvious adverse problems in the wet, nor squealing while driving slowly around corners in shopping centres/malls.

Should I have front wheels checked for alignment toe in/out and chamber?
Any good wheel alignment outfits around Farnham / Basingstoke?

i would get the tracking checked after you have put the new tyres on, also make sure the pressures are as they should be

I had exactly the same with the Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres as have several other Octy owners.

As for tracking you could maybe try Micheldever tyres.

OK, firstly, they all look legal, so no real worry regaring the law, nor the MoT - though you may get an advisory.

Some pics of the full width of the tyre would be good, then I can see the wear across the entire tread width.  However, the Dunlop SportMaxx are well known to suffer from static deformation, which basically means the tyre can't actually support the weight of the car correctly.  If you increase the rear tyre pressures by say 3psi and the fronts by 6psi, it should help negate this problem.

Exactly the same problem here. Outsides were fine... insides were worn to oblivion!!

What pressures did you run at?

Set to 2.4bar (35psi) per fuel filler flap label.
Most of the time I'm the only one in car with nothing in boot/truck.
Yes, origianl tyres.

Full length pic of tyres side by side...

Since I knew they would need changing at some time I managed to pick up an almost new set of 4 original 17" GTi alloys fitted with Conti Sport tyres which had between 6.5mm and 7mm tread, for the cost of just 3 new tyres fitted.  That way have full size matching alloy spare in tye boot at all times..
Just incase, put Conti's on last night before the MOT .. In the wet this morning,  Conti's had more grip and less wheel spin compared to the almost worn out Dunlops... :nerd:
