Megasquirt q's
« on: 01 September 2008, 12:53 »
Alright, if we've had the carbs q and a session, can i check exactly what is needed to run MEGASQUIRT?  How little can be changed and what are the improvements actually like...real world stats wise?  I'm thinking bhp/0-60 etc, but also good old fashioned grin factor?

DH?  Horney?? Anyone?? as the megasquirt sites are shocking with basic info!!!  All i wanted was a run down of how it works and what needs to be changed but it kept list rs2000 and fiesta's!

have a read of toyotecs 2.0 8v build up thread:
http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=136370

you can make it work with the oem dizzy & coil setup, he used coolant temp, inlet temp and tps to get it going.  TPS  I think will be trickiest for you, a random rover k sieries have a nice tps that fits MK2 style throttle linkages with a bit of injenuity to make a bracket up.

heres another site with good info, inc the rover tps trick:

The ford references will be due to the fact that 99% of people that use megasquirt in the UK use the Ford EDIS coil pack system for the sparking bit, saves messing about with a dizzy and gives you the ability to get the advance curve bob on. THese bits can be picked up cheap as chips from a breakers yard to.

The threads RJ has posted should do you nicely for some bedtime reading.

To run MS as I understand it you need:

Crank Position Sensor - either on a trigger wheel on the end of the crank, built in sensor a la AGG block, or from the dizzi
Manifold Absolute Pressure sender
Throttle position sensor - 2E onwards ran one, as did myriad other VAG motors - no need to buy Rovarse rubbish.  You will be better going over to a single throttle butterfly (or ITBs) as the twin butterfly system on the 8V is difficult for a sensor to read from sensibly.
Note no airflow meter needed

How you run the ignition is dependent upon set up - wasted spark using Ford coilpacks, or keep the dizzi.  Wasted spark will take you further if you start tuning and working on the engine - boost etc.  This is why more people use it.

Your standard temperature senders should see you right.

The ECU kit and loom tails cost me £170 delivered plus VAT and ParcelForce's robbing charge.

Real world benefits?  I'll tell you when my MS ECU (which is burning in at the moment) is on the car, maybe with a single throttle, maybe with the ITBs I have.  This should be before the end of the year.

The key is that you can map on the fly and optimise the map specifically for your motor.  As the complete set up is open source there are no programming charges, like you get on stuff like Emerald etc.

DannyP will be on in a bit.  He has actual knowledge of MS set ups on VW stuff, so will be better placed to answer your questions.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

i take it this on on a 16v.

3 ways of going about this conversion.    get an abf manifold, tb, and injector rail.   or get an aftermarket rail with long fingers  bosch injectors and seats ans a 2.0 passat 16v throttel body.  or itbs  and fuel rail and injectors to suit.

if wishing to use edis based ignition  an aftermarket toothed wheel pickup, or fabricatig one yourself is a requirement the vag 60-2 is not compatible with edis. ms2  can use the vag 60-2 wheel quite happily and also run wasted spark without edis  but its a bit more involved.  if driveing single coil please don't use the ms to drive the coil directly it can do it but it's just not a nice idea far better off useing the stock coil driver and triggering it with the ecu.  mine has 2 ignition outputs to drive 20v coil packs in wasted spark this also keeps ignition currents out of the ecu.

the std vag coolant temp sensor is usable.    if your engine dosent have a air inlet temp sensor or iat  one needs to be fitted.  again vag one can be used   most ppl use the gmm one tho.

FIT KNOCK SENSORS AND USE THEM.  ether the ms circuit or knocksense

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

cheers guys...seeing as its late tho i'm gonna read it tomorrow morn as i'm knackered and never take anything when tired.  Plenty of bits to look at though...

As a side, after sitting the mk2 in my mothers garage for 10 months it started first time once the battery was charged (discharged even though completely disconnected :undecided:) but now i've got to find where i put the keys once i parked the old gal back up   JV i might be needing a project thread soon...
