ive just jacked in with lloydstsb be being t0ssers (as most banks are) , so as im not paying there monthy account charge i no longer have there 'aa' cover which was minimal anyways , incase the sh!t hits the fan, were totally covered in the mini cooper as its just over a year old and is her indoors company car, but on my vr6 wich fingers crossed will run ok..... but hey ho.... how do you know??? have had the cover and never used it, so which firm would you recommend and what level etc??

the vr6 isnt driven more than 50miles from home unless im venturing to a show or owt?? but often has the mrs and kids in so dont really wanna be at the roadside like a billy no mates if it all goes pear shaped... lol

your views and opinions on all please!!

I hadn't had cover on my old cars ( 98 106, 90 Golf 1.8 Driver, 89 Golf GTi, 98 Golf TDI) and it wasn't until the car I have now (2000 golf Turbo) that I would have needed it . I broke down and luckily was able to get a tow back.

So i've taken RAC cover out on Solution 1  which is covered away from home for being towed aswell. Costs about £69 a year and that covers me in anyones car. RAC were the cheapest for teh best cover when I looke da week or two back.

iv been with greenflag since 95, never had no probs with them, infact they have been bloody good

The AA were doing a mad promo where by if your car had under 100,000 miles then it would cover the repairs for £65 english sterling, and if over it was around double, and the repairs were 3per year or summat and upto £500.  Sounds like a bargain to me but dunno if they still do it?

Insurance to cover all Europe is available through German firm ADAC for about £70 per year. If you call them in the UK the AA come out.

Oh and they're the only firm who include recovery from on the 'ring if you go there and your car breaks down/you bin it on the track.

The T25 camper boys have just cottoned on to the all Europe (and not picky about age or mileage) thing and are all over this like a rash at the moment.

Think it's a bit of a pay your dosh and take your choice really if it's just basic cover you're after. I personally wouldn't touch the AA with a disinfected barge pole due to previous crap experience but have been with RAC for 8 years and they were fantastic whenever I needed

With the RAC and when the coolant cap on me first Golf went they were there in a bout 40 mins and that was in Bristol city 5 O'clock traffic !

I was with Green Flag, but when I had my Mk4 and the window regulator went, dropping the glass into the door, they wouldn't come out and help, despite me having to leave it overnight in in a city centre car park.

Called RAC (my wife was with them) and they were out within half an hour and fixed it straight away.


No more green flag for me, ever.

I've got break down cover with my insurance, it also covers me if I breakdown in Europe and I get a free courtesy car for 2 weeks while mine gets fixed while I'm in Europe. Not sure what the state of play is while I'm in the UK though
