quick dizzy question
« on: 30 August 2008, 15:26 »
hey guys,

have just rebuilt the top end of my mk2 16v. nervously turned it over for the first time today.................
turns over fine, but won't fire up

have replaced dizzy, rotor arm, plugs etc. there is a spark to the king lead, if a little weak. checked all timing marks, and all is fine there. the coil is getting 12v from the battery. the ignition module is getting 12v too.

the only thing i'm unsure of is the firing order of the HT leads onto the dizzy cap. have definitely got #1 at 10 o'clock with the rotor at TDC, but just put the others back where they came from, so not 100% they are correct.

a firing order and any other suggestions would be great thanks, did try searching but can only find 8v info.

thanks,
james.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

and on a 16v the firing order is anticlockwise, can catch you out if you're used to workin on 8vs. ;)

thanks guys,

have checked the firing order and all is well, still won't start though

could it be due to the spark being weak, and what could be causing that?

have checked the voltage to the coil, and ignition mudule, don't really want to start replacing everything in the ignition if it could be something daft. The car started fine before I removed the head, so i'm a bit stuck now.............

tried bump starting it yesterday, thinking I might build up pressures etc. but still nothing.

argh!

i'm pretty sure the fuel pump primes, it buzzes for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on. I'm also pretty sure that the fuel is getting in, as one of the injectors was leaking from the union when i first turned it over.

i'm thinking the problem is with the sparking side. stuffed an allen key into lead #1 and arced it to the body. there was definitely a spark there, but not as strong as i was expecting. I will check all of the leads later tonight.

thanks

right that confirms the ecu is getting power, so rules out that side o it.  have you checked the voltage at the coil black plugs while the engine is cranking over?

checked the voltage at coil as per the haynes manual. when ignition on there should be 2V initially then drop to zero after a few seconds. mine measured around 5.2V for a second then disappeared completely. do you reckon that indicates a dodgy coil? 12V feed from battery is defo getting up to it.

cheers
