Racing Clutch

I will probs need a new clutch soon, and wondered if you can get a race clutch or something uprated.

I got quoted £200 for a new clutch, fitting, etc all in. Clutch was OEM straight from VW.

Seen some on ebay, any good?? like £60-80 for an uprated clutch.

How much should fitting a clutch cost? Can it be done yourself? Or is it one of things you can probably do yourself, but its best to get it done professionally?

yours is the AEX isnt it?  In which case... if you have a mate or feel strong.. do it your self.   Its the simplest engine you will get in a golf and the gearbox is missing half the mountings off the long block engines so your lucky.. its the perfect begginers clutch really.  Can do it in a day quite easily. the clutch is self takes 10 mins to swap and align.

Oh and racing clutches can be a pain!! Some are very strong and jerky, they are made to bite hard, stay cool and not burn to much.  Trying to pull away can be a tricky one  Depends, if its fast road/sports its ok but racing ones really are made for racing.  otherwise you might end up stalling alot

Go for the standard clutch from VW. There is no point in buying an uprated clutch as the standard one can more than handle the power your car is putting out.

I would give it go myself, read about it in haynes, taking the transmission out aint that hard, but i read that the clutch is hard to align, you need some sort of special tool?!?

I guess i need to go down to the dealer to get the clutch, what you reckon £100?

try your local motor factor and ask for a branded name (sachs and valeo are the o.e suppliers) and you should get one for under £60

Alignment tools are pennys and i have just aligned the clutch on my 16v engine with my finger and the box slid right on without even having to twist!!!  Its really not hard so with the tool laser make for £5 odd you cant go wrong!
