storing car need advice
« on: 26 August 2008, 19:14 »
hi peeps

i am going to work in ireland next week and could be away until christmas

now im not taking my cabby and i have asked my neices boyfriend to start the car up every fortnight and let the engine get up to temp

i've got a full size car cover for it

should i put it on axle stands to avoid flat spots in the tyres?

is there anything else i should do?

What kind of cover do you actually have as I always worried about the condensation lying between the cover actually damaged the paint some how.. :undecided:
Is it a layered breathable cover?
I always stick mine on different crappy tyres when she's standing for so long..
covered in a garage or outside?

Dinx

Clean it, but make sure ITS DRY before you put the cover on, and ensure its a breathable cover.

I also had a sheeting between the cover and car..but also aired it whenever possible..
don't forget to change your anti-freeze ratio if standing over winter..
also...i have salt in tubs which actually stop the dampness inside the car..sad i know!
and seat covers just incase anything happens to the roof and least the interior is saved..

thanx for prompt replies

really dont wanna change wheels as i want to be able to use it as soon as i get back

so any ideas on the axle stands

the alternative is to let my neices boyfriend [who drives an escort, is a bus driver and a fooking arsenal supporter  ] to run it up the road every two weeks  :undecided:

very nervous about this as the cabby has a few quirks

Whats the difference between putting it on axle stands and changing the wheels? about ten mins depending how good you are?

ooo..handbrake, keep it off and put some wedges behind the wheels..also get him to check your brakes over to stop them from seizing..

if you trust him, id let him drive it.. I personally dont, just once she's off, shes off

i aint read all this post, but i have had my jap car in dry storage for the last 3 years, the car is still as i left it

here is what i do

Remove battery
leave handbrake off
leave in gear
on axle stands all round
covered up using a custom cover, trust me dont use a cheep thing, you need to pay 100 quid plus for a cover, especially if your leaving it outside, use a cover like one on here for example  http://www.coveryourcar.co.uk/

i cover my engine up under the bonnet with bubble wrap, and spray lots of WD40 on the gearbox, throttle cable area etc

start up every couple of week, but remove battery again once done

also i leave a rear opening 1/4 window open to flow air in the car (if not fungus may kick in lol)

thats what i do, but as said earlier, mine is kept in a garage
