Don't forget that the majority (if not all) of the mainstream insurers only replace modifications with standard parts.  I've also found in the past as well that if you plan on doing lots of mods the mainstream insurers aren't competitive at all, and some won't even cover certain mods.  So if you're planning on modding heavily in the future, bear this in mind.

The specialist insurers lkike Greenlight, Adrian Flux etc. replace like-for-like so your mods will be covered and replaced if necessary.  I'm with Greenlight at the moment but have also been insured with Adrian Flux in the past and AF's system of declaring mods was a complete nightmare - I had to fill in a paper form detailing the exact modification, date fitted, details of who fitted it, cost etc. and it took ages.  If I added a mod I had to fill in the COMPLETE form again, I couldn't just add the new mod to their database because they relied on the paper forms for keeping records of the mods declared! Now they might have come out of the dark ages now and gone to a more computerised system but it really was a nightmare filling that form in as I had quite a lot of mods.

When I was with Adrian flux I was actually insured with Highway.  Once my car got to a certain point they wouldn't insure me anymore because the car was too powerful (apparently).  So I switched to Greenlight, got the paperwork through and found that I was insured with.......Highway! So they would cover me through Greenlight but not through Adrian Flux.  Doesn't make sense to me!

I've been insured with Brentacre in the past too, although they weren't very competitive when I got a newer car and tended to favour older cars at the time, but it's worth giving them a try.

....^Quality info, Golfgirl!

I didn't realise that most insurers only covered replacement with standard parts, so am thinking of changing insurer. Am I right in thinking that the best time is when my existing policy is up for renewal rather than mid term?

Also, my insurer hasn't added any costs for my 3+3 = 6pts - Is that likely to increase my costs with a new insurer?

In my experience, cancelling a policy mid-term isn't cost effective as you normally have to pay an "admin fee".  I stayed with my curerent insurer when I changed my car mid-term because even though the quote didn't work out that competitive for the remainder of the year, after cancelling mid-term and switching to a cheaper quote from someone else I would be losing out.  So I'm staying with them until renewal time then shopping around again.

It depends on the insurer I think.  I've had points in the past and did an online quote, then went back and removed the SP30 but kept everything else the same just to see what difference it made out of interest and it did make a difference but I can't remember by how much.  But the insurer I was with at the time didn't charge me any extra.  I think a lot of them accept that most people seem to have at least 3 points these days.

I can tell you from experiance RED that all point's add something even though they are a off your liscence with the boy's in blue after 3 year's they effect your policies for 5 year's and this is done on a sliding scale.
if my memory is correct there is only 3 or 4 underwriter's for every poicy effectively everyone else is a broker, or specialist.
1 thing that p!sse's me off. IS let's say some one scrape's down the side of your car in a supermarket car park they accept full blame not your fault what so ever, when you fill in your next policy you have to declare yes i was in a no cost accident ie all cost's recovered that still put's you in a certain catagorie limiting you to certain policies which effectively is narrowing the market for you and possibly stopping you getting the cheapest one available.

I know the forum has a recommended insurance company (HIC), however there quote was a total joke at £2.5K  and had a distinct lack of customer service.

I'm sure I'll be right in saying that you didn't speak to Martin at HIC. Ask specifically for him, or pm him on here with your phone number and a time to call you. Or even just post a thread in the insurance section and he'll look into it for you. He works bloody hard to maintain a rapport with forum users so I'm sure he'll want to know when one of the HIC staff are losing them trade!
