Hints at the mk6 GTI engine
« on: 25 August 2008, 15:06 »
I was reading Volkswagen Driver yesterday where they reviewed a Passat with the first in a new series of engine. It had a EA888 series 1.8 turbo engine which put out 160 PS, but had overall performance figures close to the current GTI's 2 litre turbo engine.
                                      1.8T       2.0T
Power (PS)                        160         200
Torque (max)                     250Nm     280Nm
0-60mph (sec)                   6.8          6.6
Combined Fuel econ (mpg)   36.8         29.7
It also said in the magazine that it's rumored that the next GTI will feature a 2.0T version of the EA888 series putting out about 210 PS as standard. If the figures from the 1.8T version are anything to go by then the next GTI could be well able to GO .

I would be very surprised if they don't use the 2.0TFSI engine currently found in the Audi A4 (and probably others). Has 211PS, averages 43mpg and emits 154g CO2 (in an A4).

This would make it a very green hot hatch.

Sorry if this is already common knowledge, but I've not been following the mk6 developments quite as closely as i ought to

Whilst this makes a lot of sense, and is probably the most likely, I would have thought they would be using a unit with a higher power output - i.e. the Edition 30 Engine now going into the basic GTI, so to try and compete with the higher outputs of the Astra VXR, Megane, Focus ST, Mazda MPS etc etc..?

I think you'll find your figures are a tad wrong there,.....the 1.8T passat is more like 8.6 0-60 and the combined fuel figure for the 2.0T is more like 35mpg???

I could be wrong on the 2.0T mpg figures, I'm just typing out what I read, but the 8.6s time for the 1.8T is with the old B5 1.8T. 6.8 is with the new series 1.8T.

Still think the 0-60 time is wrong, after all the 1.8T the VW UK site has it rated @ 160ps with 250NM of torque with a 0-60 of 8.6??? How could is possibly be just 1.2 secs slower than an R36 with 300ps????

The mag you refer to have been known to print things wrong so perhaps they meant 8.6????

I think they're both wrong. Is the 0-60 on the 2.0T 200PS engine not 7.2 officially (6.9 w/ DSG)?

It might be easier if you refer to the new 1.8 as the 1.8TSI - 1.8T I always think of the older 20VT unit.

As for which engine will be used in the Mk6 GTI - I would put money on the 2.0TSI 211PS or some version of it, lower co2, better mpg is what they are aiming for.  As for competing with the VXR etc, can you really see these continuing to sell with that engine in a year or so...
