how much is it to get a wheel bearing done.
because mines on its way out on the front left

I got quoted 80quid plus vat
i reckon thats way to much

then i tried another place n got quoted 40 to 45quid plus vat
which was better but can it be done even cheaper

I very much doubt you'd get it done cheaper than that. It's over an hours work so the labour alone would work out at ?45 at most garages. I'd snatch their hand off quick, however at that price I would check the quality of the parts they will be using. Last time I had a front wheel bearing replaced it was about the ?80 mark.

Oh no, not another person that thinks car repairs should be cheap!!
Front wheel bearings aren't an easy job,  2 hours labour i would say.
The housing needs to be removed, the old bearing needs pressing out, and new bearing pressed in.
A hydraulic press is needed for the job, these aren't exactly cheap.
Remember garages need to make a living, so expensive equipment needs to be paid for.

?80 including parts is a good price.........I've always used a hydraulic press to do the job and not everyone has access to one. I think even the one I usually use is u/s at the moment.

The first mk1 golf gti front wheel bearing I had done, back when I was 18, only cost me ?30........I watched, horrified, as he beat it out with a club hammer and used the same procedure to beat the new one in ::)
I ended up doing the job myself about 6 months later.........properly ;)

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.
