leaking oil filter

help needed

i recentley changed the oil and filter on my mk3 16V Mreg car the problem i have is its leaking from around the top of the filter, i had got it as tight as possible by hand

i tried changing the filter and did the same again tightening by hand but still leaked so i then used a a special filter wrench to tighten it, guess what it still leaks, its not a big leak but enough to annoy me, i'm also sure it only leaks when the engine is running (not 100%sure though)

please please help

has the nut that holds the oil cooler loosend thus tightening against the nut? (my bet or something related)

damage to oil cooler where "o" ring sits or "o" ring not fitted?

correct filters, maybe 2 dodgy ones from same batch, same supplier used?

yeah same filters same supplier, nut loosening sounds like a good idea will check that first, will have to wait till weekend now but will let you know how i get on

Hi Daz,

I had this problem recently on my 16V. It was the 'o' ring that seals the top end of the oil cooler take off  that had flattened and so was not sealing effectively. You should'nt use a filter wrench to tighten up the oil filter or you risk crushing the oil cooler adaptor .I also changed the metal gasket between the adaptor and the side of the block, just in case. Its now all oil tight again.

Mine had been leaking oil for ages only to find out it was the oil pressure switch just above the oil filter. £11 job done no leaks.
