Service timing on imports
« on: 20 August 2008, 22:50 »
Hello all, I'm considering joining you by buying a MkV GTI.

I've done plenty of trawling and searching through past threads for what to look for when buying.  Since there are lots of imports about, I don't want to dismiss them all out of hand.  I'm aware of the issues to check e.g. PDI sticker, alarm, lights, rear speakers, etc.

What I haven't found is how the servicing pattern could be (or should be) affected on imports that have had a delay between having the PDI and being registered in the UK, and for that matter between being built and having the PDI.

Chances are the first owner would follow the servicing regime from the registration date.  But for any timed items such as belts, would it be better for them to be looked at sooner.  Lets say I see a car built in 2006 but registered in 2007.  Would it be better to change the cambelt in 2010, assuming no mileage limit kicks in, instead of 2011?

Thanks,

James

....Welcome here, James

The very first thing you should do with any import is to register it with VW UK. You can then go to any VW dealer of your choice and follow a servicing schedule from there.

For an import you'll only get a 2 year warranty unless you specifically extend it - Easy to do.

RR - thanks for the reply.

It's quite possible i'll be going down the second hand route as the car won't do a huge mileage and buying new could be a waste.  I once owned a parallel imported MX-5 from new, registered in March 2003, but the warranty began in June 2002 from the Belgian PDI and it was probably built around April 2002 from markings inside.  I must admit that I treated the service schedule from the reg date and so the original oil sat in the car for two years from new until the first service in spring 2004.  Similarly, brake fluid was changed after three years, not two.  In hindsight, I should have had them done earlier, but the same issue could arise on potential imported Golf buy and I'm not sure how much harm, if any, it does.

I don't want to rule out imports because I'm quite fussy on spec.  I would like a 5 door DSG with pretty much all the option boxes ticked, though not bothered about satnav.  From scouring Autotrader/eBay/Pistonheads/forum ads, those identified (or identifiable) as imports seem to have a generous spec, though many seem to annoyingly omit the Highline display.  The value lost on options when secondhand makes used look better value, but harder to find exactly the right car.

I'm tempted at least to have a look at the one not far from me from the 'is this car dodgy' thread from a few days ago.  It very much looks like it was built over two years ago though is still not registered.  Despite the fact it has barely moved in that time, the VW warranty is likely to have expired.  With the concern in the first post, I feel it needs a first service already.

....Although modern cars are vastly extended on their servicing requirements, I personally believe that regular servicing is very important to maintain longevity and good health.

my import told me on the computer that i needed a service in 600 miles - this was after about 10500 miles (10 1/2 months after i brought it) which seems about right
