warranty decision to make
« on: 20 August 2008, 10:08 »
All....my 3 year warranty bites the big one on 4th september this year.  Can't afford to buy a new GTI just now  and because my car is no good have no need to want one!

I've had the reminder letter from VW they want £401 for a year and no payment terms to extend warranty up to 15,000 miles.  I appreciate that there are other independents, who are every bit as good, I am not sold on the vw warranty at all.

Now, this period will take in my 40,000 mile service, thats a biggie I think and if there are any issues perhaps my £401 will be money well spent.

So to assist me make a more balanced decision, ...is there anyone on here who has significantly benefitted from having extended their warranties into their fourth year? If so can you post please, I rather suspect these extended warranties are all weighted away from the user and that as ever you tend to get nothing for nothing in this world.

Also, did anyone who has completed their 40k service encounter any significant issues that were covered under warranty?

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

....Just seen this thread, buddy - Sorry for late reply.

My VW dealer privately told me not to bother with the extended warranty and said it was heavily weighted in favour of the insurer.

I've now done 51k miles and had my 40k miles service. My car has an oil change service every 10k miles anyway and plugs every 20k. It's thoroughly checked over every time she's in the workshop. She'll be in VW Racing's workshop all next week and even more thoroughly checked over.

I noticed from the extended warranty info that not everything is covered anyway and it gets much worse if you extend even further. Although some people have previously said to me that I'll trash my warranty by modding, it's not true - If I have a brake problem, AP Racing will sort it; if I have an exhaust problem, Milltek will sort it out, Revo the same, etc etc.

Of course, no-one can ever know what's around the corner or whether extending your warranty will have been worth it or not. It's a risk either way but I tend to think positive about everything.

Thanks RR.  Given the lack of replies thus far I am guessing that either few people have extended their warranties and actually benefitted from the cover OR that there are hardly any of our contributors who have experience any warranty cover issues at the 40,000 mile service.

£400 is quite a lot of small repairs really, particularly if you consider moving away from a franchised main dealer to a specialist independent.  This year I have had nothing on the car replaced under warranty....yet (still have until 4th September).

It's a gamble, something I am not good at.  Not sure I will oil change every 10k or replace the plugs with the same frequency you will mind.  Biggest concern is of course something expensive goes, like dsg or an ecu, big end...no reason to think so, my car runs like a dream in every respect.

Still undecided, at least warranty direct allow you to pay up the premium at about £30 per month.

....I think that lack of replies is only because so few here have reached that warranty expiration stage.

My extra servicing is only because my car is modified and it's preventative maintenance. VWR will look after any DSG box issues for me in their own workshop.

£30 per month is a good way to pay if you decide to go for it. Read the small print though before signing up.

so...by being a skinflint...I am actually being a trailblazer! (now thats me thinking positive, for a change lol)

It will be very interesting to see the ripple wave of these kind of discussions coming through as the cars get towards their 3 year mark...

so perhaps given the Mk5's lack of exposure in the 3-6 year lifecycle, I should actually play safe and take out the extended warranty....hmmm, anyway...enough thinking out loud.  :lipsrsealed:

....As I think you said earlier - it's a gamble whichever way you choose. Only you can decide.
