air intake

hey,
i was dicussing with a friend earlier about air intakes and he seems to think that drilling my air box, on a mk2 golf gti 8v, would not benefit.
i have bought the car recently and it has already been done so i was hoping if anyone could sort this issue out i would appreciate it.
also while ive got your attention could anyone point me in the right direction with intake i would be grateful.

drilling the airbox will give the engine better breathing but only drill holes on the cold side of the bay... and its best to use a better panel filter (piperX is my fave)... it wont really give more power (max will be 1or2bhp) but its made mine better in mid range..

cheers, my friend said that air intakes are pressured and it loses this pressure when the air box is drilled, but he's got a ford fiesta so what does he know?

To add on to previous points, there is a secondary pipe that leads out the back of your airbox to an intake that hangs over the manifold.  This is to recycle hot air produced from the heat off your manifold back into the engine and increases fuel efficiency.  Whip the pipe off the manifold end and then place it pointing toward your wing (away from the engine so you get some nice cold air.)  This should help increase throttle response and make the engine a bit smoother through the revs .  This will reduce fuel economy though.

regards the last post. ive tried it on my driver and it made a good difference, even my mate agreed.
but like you said the fuel consumption did go down a little quicker.

ive drilled the airbox on my driver, and it definitly made it sound better, cant really say anything about performance as i didnt notice much difference, but it is revvy throughtout the range.
