....Published mpg stats from VW are a joke! But as you say, buy a Bluemotion or a diesel if it's important to you.

hey in these troubled times we need ying and yang so the total cost is the same.

I reckon its not about absolute mpg but saving those extra litres when you cant enjoy the car, so you can rag it another time.
Normal commute = Radio 4 (ok Im oldish!) , road too busy to 'enjoy' the car = 26 ish mpg average
When the occasion presents = 'enjoy'  = <20 mpg

If I were you DSG guys I'd be more worried about miles/gearbox   vive le manual

I bought my GTI cos i luved the car i wouldnt want to drive anythin else at the mo, i do about 2000 miles a week and i get approx 14p a mile back from work which when you do the sums does leave a small defacit in my back pocket, im not really concerned TBH but you do get used to the fact you have abit of power under your foot and dont feel the need to exercise it all the time and drive everywhere @ 100 mph! of course its different on the weekend when you go out for a spin or something, what im getting at is that for alot of people on here its a second car and not a daily commute, maybe im wrong but i think that is where the difference in opinion lies!

....At the great risk of starting yet another DSG vs Manual debate, let me just say that unless your name is Hurdy the DSG box of tricks is likely to last longer than the Manual simply because it doesn't involve a human slipping the clutch etc and because it has so many built-in safeguards.

I'm not all worried about mileage on my DSG - It's regularly serviced and has its oil+filter changed.

I would love to boast about how fast i drive my GTi and how i only get 20mpg but the fact is that i simply cannot afford to drive my car like that every journey.  Dont get me wrong, when the moment is right i will drive the gti like is was meant to be driven, but for the majority of the time i drive with a view not to burn my hard earned cash away by getting to work 5 mins earlier!

....That's the great thing about the Mk5 GTI - As Jeremy Clarkson said, it's such a great allrounder - You can sedately do the school run and then scream home like a rally driver and then later pickup a chest of draws.

I just drive according to conditions and don't think about the mpg.

I think sadly for me since I have to use my car for work and when I'm also travelling 500 miles round trip to see my fiance, I tend just to plod along in it..  I know its got some power and that its fairly quick in standard trim, but I dont need to go revving the nuts off of it to enjoy it :)

Where I live there's so many narrow roads and bends in the way, its more fun trying to manage to keep the speed as near to and if safe to the roads speed limit rather than seeing how fast you can go from x mph to x mph before braking hard as hell and its not a good thing considering the standard brakes arent great anyways (maybe thats my fault coming from £3500 of AP Racing brakes from my Scoob??  ) Those have definitely got to be changed!!

I always reset the trip counter after filling up, noting down the mileage and amount of fuel put in and I just work it out from there.  I found my TDI computer to be miles out..  When it started telling me I had averaged 80mpg's I did think something was slightly a bit wrong!!

I have had a GT TDI 130 (about 9 to 10 months I think) and whilst that was an ok drive on a long journey for the econemy (spelling) (at least 50mpg) I couldnt stick with it, it just wasnt my type of car.  Mainly due to always having had petrol cars and performance (well mostly) petrol cars at that..
Saying that tho, my GTI does seem to be easy to get 400 miles from a tank without hassles and generally has no problems building speed up rather quickly either..
That said, my lowest MPG since I've owned it is only 35mpg.....
One thing I'd love to do it get it on a set of rollers as I'd like to see what its pushing out in both torque and bhp....

....I guess that Portsmouth might be a bit too far for you - We've got a forum r-road day on Dyno-Dynamics rollers at JKM on 4th October.

Yes, AP brakes are the dog's danglies!

I agree Top Cat, having owned a gti ed30 now for 6 months I can confirm you really have to drive like an old granny to get anywhere near 30mpg.grin: I dont do a lot of long journeys where you can see the better mpg, but on a trip to liverpool the other week i managed for a brief period 29mpg until i hit the toll road where it plummeted in a few minutes back down to 21mp, where it belongs.....
you want good mpg buy a bluemotion!

That is shocking mpg!! I have had to calm my driving a little recently and still manage 27mpg quite easily round town, without hanging around. tbh I you dont really need to go above 3k revs to build up good speeds but i guess thats the advantage of low down torque. Have quite easily managed 30mpg (20m) round trip to work. :nerd:
