Has my 40,000 mile service removed my remap?
« on: 17 August 2008, 23:49 »
Had a loss of power on my remapped GTI.  Had its 40,000 mile service last Saturday and have noticed the power returning, but not to the full remap power of what I was use to.  It now feels like a standard GTI.  The service was done privately by a VW engineer who has his own diagnostic equipment.  Could this have removed my remap?

If the service wasn't done by a VW dealer then I'm pretty ceratain your ecu wasn't flashed with the latest update. Instead try looking to see if you are losing boost because of a torn DV.

....Only if an ECU update from VW was loaded. The last one was 24K6 and is known to 'dump' a remap. The engineer should have told you anyway if he had loaded the update and should have entered the event in your service log book. It's very important to get everything logged in your book.

A failed DV will also lose you power. (As bacillus also suggests)

Which remap do you have?

i have to say i think you would know for sure if the map was no longer on the car, perhaps its like what RR says (as in DV)

Some remaps have a "self protection code" built into them. This means that even if you just try to read the code on the ECU it will reset to its own version of standard.

Have you asked the guy who did it if he did read the ECU or do an update?

I have spoken to the guy who did the remap (Torquetronix in N.Ireland) and he says its highly unlikely the remap was removed.  Says its more likely to be a mechanical issue instead of the ECU.  He will test it to be sure if I like.  I'm having a guy look at the turbo this week. I posted on this about a week ago and most people said it was the DV.  Got the PN from vrstu so I'll be looking at that.  It's just strange that a service has improved the boost so much.  I would have thought that if it was the DV (which the service didn't touch) the boost wouldn't have improved.

Just ordered the DV today from the dealers, having quoted the PN I got from vrstu.  Having it fitted by an independent hopefully on Saturday.  It's known as the cutoff valve.  Nobody seemed to have heard (dealers or independents) of a diverter valve.  I would estimate my car is producing about 140 bhp at the moment because my brothers TDI is quicker!  Really depressing .  Was considering the Forge but have went with the standard VW valve.  This is the latest version of the DV.  Apparantly VW realised there was a problem and have tweaked it a bit. Cost £30. Just hope it works.

There have been a few revisions of DV but you should remember VW tries to make them  "reliable" for cars with standard boost only i.e. not a remapped car.

At least if I use this one and it fixes the loss in power I will know what the issue is.  I take your point though.  I may upgrade at some point but I'm just after spending £180 on a set of front tyres so finances have been hit hard this month
