any MK1/Scirocco/MK2 with a 2 speed fan (3 pin plug) will do you.  Though maybe some earlier MK1s may have a different shaped plug on.  Pretty much any engine size from 1.6/1.8 will have the right one, AFAIK pretty much only the MK2 16v had a single speed fan, though real early/base spec may too.  Not 100% sure if 1.3 fans will work, they may do?  Ebay is the place to be :)

Is it definitly the fan motor at fault and not say the blades rubbing on the cowling/rad?

I had this and it scared the sh!t out of me until I got a new fan, I got a fan (motor and blades) from NotEscorts £20 delivered :afro: It might have been from a Passat, not sure... it does sit a bit tilted compared to the standard fan with the plug at the bottom, but it does the job

At first I thought it was the clutch grinding because a mechanic told me my clutch was also going -  :lipsrsealed:
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Mine also occasionally makes a horrible grinding noise, but only about 3 or 4 times in the last month? seems to do it when it fancies it. Thought it was rubbing on the casing, but that doesn't explain why it is only occasionally. Any ideas or help? Thank you!
