Natural Cruising Speed
« on: 15 August 2008, 10:09 »
Yesterday was my first opportunity to do a long(ish) distance motorway journey in my GTi. What I noticed over the course of it was the natural cruising speed is noticeably slower than my previous car, a 3-series coupe. I found the Golf most comfortable at around 70mph, were as the BMW was more natural around 90mph.

I'd put this down to a more aerodynamic shape and longer gearing, but are there any other factors that come into play?

Tyre choice can play a big factor in such things as well. Having said that, my previous car was a Vauxhall Omega 3.0MV6, due to the size of engine it was much happier at erm... quite high speeds than pootling at 60-70!

....Mine seems happy at various speeds but I guess that 80-85 ish is where the engine feels most loose. I expect that the torque curve will make a difference between individual cars.

Yeah, the quality of the tyres do make a difference, and in general terms of tyre construction, directional tyres were supposed to be better than non-directional/symetrical tyres for reducing road noise.

Another issue is the quality of the road surface too.  On certain sections of the A1(M) and the A11 (I think!) which have concrete as the road surface, the road noise dives me potty!

Anyhow, in the RS, it seems happy cruising at 140 to 150 leptons - which is roughly double zutons, and about half whiptons per hour!
