iPhone Connection to RCD500
« on: 14 August 2008, 17:03 »
Hi,

I've been trying to find out how to connect an iPhone to the RCD500 to my Edition 30 and can't seem to find the answer because in some cases it says by connecting the iPhone to it you can't then use the in-built disc changer. I don't really wnat to upgrade the headunit as i'm fine with it but just want to connect to it
Is it possible to connect using the aftermarket leads from the dealer but also keep the changer useable in the headunit??

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

JD

PS This is a great forum and I really need to get round to posting pictures of my car as I've had her for over a year now and still haven't!!!

I'll try and get the photo's up this weekend!!! I'm at the dealers tomorrow for a service but i aren't sure if they know what they are really on about with the connection and I don't want to end up wasting money on it!

the standard "factory kit" is useless on an ipod and original iphone.  you have limited control of 5 playlists.

I have that kit and did use it with an ipod and original iphone.  however now my new iphone 3G wont work with it, it says "not supported accessory", as apple changed the way it charges the iphone, and the VW kit uses the firewire terminal, which is no longer supported with the new iphone 3G.

depending what phone you have, its crap both ways.

there is a new SDI connector coming out, but im not sure it supports the new iphone and its about £300.

Sorry TC but my journey home took 1 hour longer than normal and the big box of Detailing goodies that arrived today was my first prioity.

Anywho back to the topic.

For the RCD500 any ipod kit will not stop the built in changer from working.

As 2007 GTI says the new MDI interface is available but only for the later RCD510 headunit and not the 500 you have unfortunatly.

So have a look at either of these - http://www.dension.com/GW100.php (Good if you have highline comp) or http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/VW-_DICE__iPod_Car_Kit
