acceleration problem

My car is being a pain in the arse at the moment.  When I accelerate it doesnt feel very smooth and when the revs hit 5k they wont go any higher it almost feels like I am hitting a rev limiter.  The car I have is a mk3 gti 8V.  If any one has any ideas that would be a lot of help.

My car did something similar.

In my case a bit of my catalytic converter had broken off and was jamed further down the exhaust.  My catalytic converter had been rattling for some time first.

Just an idea?
