But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

I've still got a huge soft spot for the Mk4 R32 - Its possibly the best looking golf ever made (well lets say top 3), so squat and very aggressive in the details, but still subtle enough to be tasteful. Shame its not a patch on the Mk5 chassis, which means that if I had the money I would prob go with a Mk5 GTI, but it would be a close decision.

That is the only other Golf I would give up my G60 for!
Saying that though, the G60 will be going within a year or so to make way for a mid '80's Porsche 911 Carrera.

Good choice.  I'm constantly toying with the idea of a 944 S2.  £4000 buys a good one, and thats a lot of car for the money. Trouble with Porsche's is the cost of parts though.

You pay a little more for the 911, but the spare parts are relatively cheap and in abundant supply. I want to buy a shed like my G60 was, and transform it to exceed the standard of my current project.
