Alighment has always been extra, although most places will check your alignment for free and only charge you if an adjustment is required - which again they give you the option and tell you hwo far out it is etc then its your choice.

Prices do tend to vary quite a bit for general alignments - £15.00 to £50, this is general tracking I am talking about not 4 wheel re-alignment which involces more, especially on the MK5 as it has adjustable rear and most places will charge per axle.

....My VW dealer has one of those Beisbarth laser rigs and I do all 4 wheels when tyres are changed - Keeps it all tip-top.

Yes indeed however that is NOT explicitly stated up front. Let me report candidly when I have the end bill then at least our forum members will have the facts.

Caveat Temptor etc...YES, I should have checked but was lured by the "no additional charges", i have never realised that alignment was actually optional...i am sure its advised,...another example of the rip off culture perhaps?  You can hear the corporate meeting now can't you..." "We just gotta stiff the customer for that little bit more...come on lets get it up them, if they sit down whilst they are waiting, charge them for seat occupancy, watching telly, reading the magazines etc". Let me refer everyone to Ryanair, Easyjet etc and baggage."

I have NO ISSUES with companies making money, that's why they are there! ffs. However ALL should be transparent whether you are replacing FOUR tyres and paying nearly £500 them OR having a punture fixed

As I say watch this space for the good, the bad and the ugly of Black Circles....hopefully I can report a gloriously groundbreaking and inspirational story....however my fears are another £50 on top and a whole load of feckin hassle.

Although you are right in what you are saying my question is has somebody upped your dose of medication this morning as you seem rather excited about this situation i fear for the poor tec who dareth scrapeth your wheeleth

Anyone used if so, what was the deal re alignment etc? There was NO mention of course, at least not in the general screens about this, although I would bet it was tucked away in T&C's (which I should have read I know..dont waste your time saying so). Sad that first I hear of it up front is when you get the confirmation email AFTER AFTER AFTER you have parted with your cash!!!!

Bloody hell

I would'nt let the fitters do any more work on my car for sure  !

Just ask them to change your tyres and leave the car alone,  regardless of what they say

Never had mine tracked or aligned unless I was having uneven tyre wear

....Obviously having uneven tyre wear would be a sure sign of either wrong tyre pressures or your wheels needing alignment. However, you'd be surprised how a car like the GTI goes off track/alignment simply due to being driven on typical UK roads. Unless you drive like a granny of course, but then you'd probably hit a few kerbs and so also need alignment.

If you want to look after your car well and help your tyres last longer, have it aligned/tracked professionally on a VAG Beissbarth. If you don't care about such things, it's up to you.

If anyone is a member of costco then the PS2's are £115 all in. I bought one the other day for the spare wheel.

....Full size spare wheel?

Maybe a spare Monza II lying around in his garage, rather than the pram-wheel space-saver?  :undecided:

T_T - You wanted to know the steel spare I have on board which came with my 17's - # 1K0601027B. Thanks, you provided the excuse I needed to tidy up my boot!

Huh - that is the same part no as the 18" space saver!  So is yours a 17" or 18" pram wheel?  :undecided:

Do they give you the "before" and "after" printouts?  Would be interested to see just how much adjustment is needed - if any!

Not quite true.  Suspension and steering geometry will ONLY go out of alignment via two fundamentally separate ways.  Either impact damage or the like has physically bent or deformed a suspension component - in that case, the damaged item needs replacing, before any re-alignment is carried out.  Or, general "wear and tear" in the suspension bushes and swivels will cause a gradual change in alignment - which can simply be sorted by re-alignment, providing said wear is not great enough to lead to physical play or slop, which would be an MoT failure.

If you want to look after your car well and help your tyres last longer, have it aligned/tracked professionally on a VAG Beissbarth. If you don't care about such things, it's up to you.

But if the tyres are wearing spot on evenly, it is a very good sign that the alignment is spot on.

I remember a thread on this forum about a year back, with a picture of the rear tyres, and the poster concerned his alignment was out, because the outer section of the tyre didn't seem to be touching the ground.  We told him that it was caused by the rear wheel camber, and that when cornering, the forces would "even out" the wear across the entire tread width.
