If the Kumho's were on the Tiguan, I am guess they were factory fitted? Did VW fit these shyte tyres from stock?

Yeah!

I know they factory "budget" brands of tyres on some of their poverty-spec cars, such as the Fox, and the non-performance Polos - but never on anything large like the Passat or their performance models.  I really was shocked to find them on the Tiguan, because being a "tall" car, with a hig centre of gravity, any dynamic forces, such as leaning out when cornering, or pitching forward when braking - are more "exagerated", due to the height of the car.  Because of this, it places even greater demands on the tyres, and the Kunhos really were the weakest link on the car.  Good job I'm not Anne Robinson!

I know that the previous owner (but one) replaced the fronts at 15000,

I bet that was just before he sold it!   Sadly, that is a typical tactic when selling a car.

I am nearly 30000 now and again its time to replace.  The ones I am replacing are probably snyde as well, they are Barum Bravius!

NO NO !!!   I really, REALLY, don't get why people put crap budget tyres on a high performance car!

So there was a pair of Kumhos, AND a pair of Barums ???  That means the previous owner must have driven it very hard - because, by simple maths, he/she would have needed to replace the front tyres every 7,500-ish miles!  That must say they had done more 1/4 mile sprints than Hurdy <wink>, or trying to out-brake Lewis Hamilton on every roundabout!

I sometimes feel a little less planted than I should going round corners, thought a, it might be the entry speed or b, the fronts getting low,or just poor tyres all round perhaps?

Not good.  Other peeps on other forums, who use Kumho, report the same similar lack of cornering grip.  Some even think they are "cool", purely because they slide so much on corners, and one silly little tw@t is even a "fan" of Kumhos, stating he'll never buy anything else - but then he only has a Golf IV TDI PD115.

Had a Mini Cooper S before, it cornered like it was on rails!

And the GTI (and not forgetting the R32 ) will also corner like on rails, on the OEM tyres.  Do you remember when Jeremy Clarkson first tested the GTI on Top Gear?  He actually raved about how good the cornering was, and managed to lift the inside rear wheel clear of the tramac.  You need three things to do that - (a) grip, from the tyres, (b) a stiff, strong chassis, and (c) well-designed suspension.  Change anyone of those three, and you will reduce the cornering ability.  Now, I'm not suggesting you've been wielding a hacksaw to the underside of your GTI, nor getting a bastard file to your springs and dampers  , so the only "area" which has reduced the cornering ability in yours is the tyres!

At the end of the day, you can ask anyone, from Ross Brawn and Lewis Hamilton, all the way down through Traffic Police and advanced/performance driving instructors, to "enthusiastic" joe public road car drivers - and they will all state that tyres are THE most critical part of a car.  You could have RedRobins superb AP brakes, Hurdys crazy 380bhp, some awesome mega suspension - but it will all be wasted with crap tyres.  The brakes, no matter how good, only stop the actual wheel from rotating - it is the grip generated between the tyre and road surface which stops the car (or makes it corner, or accelerate).  The (one of many) huge complaint I had with the Pirelli P-Zero Rossos on my RS4 was they were completely overwhealmed by the power of my Ceramic brakes, and even under what I would describe as "modest braking", the fronts would lock, and the ABS would start working overtime.  With my PS2s, no such problem.  I can brake so hard, and get so much grip from my tyres, my specs (which I used to wear - Polos) regularly flied off my head and hit the windscreen!

First things first TT, she needs to get through her MOT on Saturday. Just paid Gordon Brown £210 as well. I  have a couple of other mods I am considering first before chucking away 2 tyres with loads of tread, however shyte they may be.

Gordon must need it for his hols, as I too have just coughed up £210 for the GIT!   BTW, did you use the online tax disc order?  It's much better than queing in the PostOffice, along with the aroma of stale urine, and having to look at beardy old women!

I really would recommend some decent tyres as your first "mod", you'll be able to use much more of the performance you already have!  And you won't need to advise your insurance if you fit a set of PS2s!

Wow! I'm speechless! will have to read your post a couple of times to take all that in. You've got me worried about how hard my wee car has been driven previously...mind you no surprise it was the first owner who milltekd and ABT'd the car up! as well as bedeckking her in some truely tasteless jewerly in the form of silver handles, silver headlamp trims and internal blue lights FFS....any ETTO eh?

I think your right, time to ditch the old boots, safety first :) and all that

Wonder how much costco are for those PS2's....will have a look, cos apparently getting the asymmtrics just now is impossible.....lol at least according to the oil covered, inarticulate scroat i approached in Kwik fit (for a laugh)....and who wanted £165 a corner for the F1's....no wonder Tom Farmer farts fivers!

So...just phoned Black Circles, they confirmed they have stock and can fit locally for £117.38 per corner fully fitted! Jeez it seems that you really can't Sh1t Kwiker than a Kwik Fit sh!tter eh?

....T_T is right about the importance of tyres. Your only point of contact with the road is an area about the size of one CD case on each tyre.

Ok Costco have the PS2s for £150.30 fully fitted however they only take cash or cheque, so even if you think they are a superior tyre TT they are out of my league right now.

Just ordered 4, yes 4! you heard it here first! the tight scotsman is actually parting with £471.60 for 4 Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics! Black Circles, just going to call for confirmation of fitting date, hopefully before Saturday...... Thank Gawd for Credit Cards!

Oh and to top it all off, I have managed just 254 miles out of a full tank!

Gotta love the GTI shes a very demanding lover.

Have you decided on the PS2's then TT?

Yup, to match the PS2 already on the rear.  £136 all in (for one, obviously) - ATS just pricematched a couple of quotes, so fresh rubber tomorrow for SWMBO.

If anyone is a member of costco then the PS2's are £115 all in. I bought one the other day for the spare wheel.

Guys

Check this out...if you buy with Black circles you get a price fully fitted..."NOTHING extra to pay!"

However confirmation email states...

"Please allow approximately 30 minutes for the fitting of each tyre. Please note this is an average figure and some tyres may take longer to fit than others
The fully fitted price includes fitting, a new valve, standard balancing and old case disposal
Please ensure you have read our terms and conditions
Please ensure that you have your locking wheel nut key and that the fitting centre is made aware of its location.
Any extra services (i.e tracking, alignment, swapovers) are payable directly to the centre and are not the responsibility of Black Circles
Double check the tyre size and speed rating (e.g. TR) above against your existing tyre size.
To be safe you should check the pressures once a fortnight. To find out what pressure your tyres should be please refer to your Vehicle Manual. Remember that tyre pressures should only be checked when your tyres are cold. A good guideline is to leave them for an hour to cool down before checking.
After your tyres have been fitted it is strongly recommended that the wheel nuts of the tyres changed are checked after approximately 50 miles, to ensure they have settled correctly and have remained at the correct torque setting."

Alarmingly this tracking, alignment and swapovers statement and cost etc are concerning!  Lets see how much the Barstewards try to stiff me for!....watch here for a glorious tale of supreme customer service OR to hear the usual tale of woe related to overcharging, misinformation, late delivery, poor installation, scuffing of alloys, denial of responsibility and general sloapey shoulderdness.

Anyone used if so, what was the deal re alignment etc? There was NO mention of course, at least not in the general screens about this, although I would bet it was tucked away in T&C's (which I should have read I know..dont waste your time saying so). Sad that first I hear of it up front is when you get the confirmation email AFTER AFTER AFTER you have parted with your cash!!!!

Bloody hell

tracking is always an optional thing.

blackcircles use a network of independent garages, the job just gets past on to them once you place the order.

so blackcircles will not charge you more for anything, they have done their part of the arrangement, anything else is between you and the garage you have chosen to go to.

Yes indeed however that is NOT explicitly stated up front. Let me report candidly when I have the end bill then at least our forum members will have the facts.

Caveat Temptor etc...YES, I should have checked but was lured by the "no additional charges", i have never realised that alignment was actually optional...i am sure its advised,...another example of the rip off culture perhaps?  You can hear the corporate meeting now can't you..." "We just gotta stiff the customer for that little bit more...come on lets get it up them, if they sit down whilst they are waiting, charge them for seat occupancy, watching telly, reading the magazines etc". Let me refer everyone to Ryanair, Easyjet etc and baggage."

I have NO ISSUES with companies making money, that's why they are there! ffs. However ALL should be transparent whether you are replacing FOUR tyres and paying nearly £500 them OR having a punture fixed

As I say watch this space for the good, the bad and the ugly of Black Circles....hopefully I can report a gloriously groundbreaking and inspirational story....however my fears are another £50 on top and a whole load of feckin hassle.
