goodyear f1 asymmetrics
« on: 13 August 2008, 15:38 »
Guys, just about to get 2 fronts replaced, reckon that they may fail my up and coming MOT (booked Saturday at a local independent).

I fancy the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 225/40 R18 Y (92), after the recent review and rave comments on here.

I can get them on Blackcircles.com for £117.38 a corner.

Does this seem ok?

.... I remember someone on here for 4 for £320, but then I would need balance, valve, postage etc...even if that deal were still available..so thats out.

My rear tyres are fine just now, thankfully.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

That seemed about the going rate on the internet - however I use a local company based near me who did them for £107 per corner. But I don't think you can go too wrong with that price you've been quoted.

....There's a thread somewhere in this forum all about the possible problems when you mix Assymetrics with Directional tyres - Obviously a matched pair per axle.

It's considered best practice both in the tyre industry and among drivers, to put your deeper treaded tyres on the rear axle of a FWD. Consequently, I've got Goodyear GSD3 with 4-5 mm on the front and new Goodyear Assyms on the rear. Randomly over about the first 700 miles, with ESP On, I experienced sudden 'snatching' of a front wheel as the ESP read the start of a possible skid and kicked in. Goodyear Techsupport aren't sure what is happening but we think that it's the difference in constructional flexibility / shoulder rigidity which is causing it. For now at least, the problem has stopped and so I haven't tried swopping to have the new Assyms on the front.

What tyres would you be keeping with the new Assyms?

eeek...not sure what's on the rear will have a look and report later.

Yes i read that thread, also think TT suggested running in the new tyres on the front for a while then getting them swapped with the rears to avoid the end of life issues.

Thanks for the advice RR. I can't get a better price it seems than above, think i will ask if the tyres currently will fail an mot, if they don't they stay on a while longer!

I paid 245 about a 2weeks ago for 2 tyres fitted all inc. So not a bad price!

Must say i am starting to think i need them on the back. Did have a little "snatch" moment on the way home last night (very wet)! fronts gripped... back end slid out... flashing esp light etc etc.. will try it again on the way home today. but I am guessing this will be less of a problem with the GTi

Huh - didn't you read about the problems which people had with them also.

I just don't get why people are happy to pay for a quality German engineered car, and then fit inferior Yankie Goodyear tyres, which have no OEM approvals or OEM fitments!  ETTO, though!

As RR asked, what boots are on the rear?

Yup, to match the PS2 already on the rear.  £136 all in (for one, obviously) - ATS just pricematched a couple of quotes, so fresh rubber tomorrow for SWMBO.
