car cancer!
« on: 12 August 2008, 19:40 »
Hi all

My 90 mk2 16v has just spectacually failed its yearly health check , it has quite bad rust/rot on the inside of the wing/under the battery and as a result it has a crack near the suspension mount and the sub frame has dropped slightly on that side!! Does anyone know if this can be fixed? can you get inner wings to weld in and fix everything back where it should be? or does anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance all

You might be able to get away with welding in some 3 or 5mm plating but not so sure about the cracked turret

How confident are you in welding?

You could drop the engine out, repair/replace the subframe then build a new turret, I did my old AX GT and at the same time re-enforced it with angle :) lol

You COULD change the inner for one from a breaker yard if you can get one cut out? i spose as long as its a good job and its safe your all good.

Or hide it for the MOT, but its a safety check and its on your own arse if it snaps/goes further and someone gets hurt.

Phone around or take it to other garages and see what they charge.
Try the guys in the MK2 section, maybe someone there will be able to do this sort of work cheaper

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

jesus 800 quid seems steep if you could get it up north west im sure my mate could do it for a quarter of that, do you think it could be done with the engine in situ? or has it gone further?

that is the worst case price but have got my mechanic mate taking it to his mate to a crash repair place so hopefully they can sort something, the sooner the better i cant wait to get behind that wheel again
