Mk1 Cabrio leccy windows
« on: 03 May 2004, 15:27 »
Does anyone know of any electric window kits availible for the rear of a Mk1 cabrio ???
I haven't seen any cabrio's with electric windows in the rear. It could be that there's not a load of space there for that kinda thing but i wanna build some speaker pods in the rear cards but can't with those badly placed window winders.

I looked into this last year, and the only thing I could find was a bit of a bodge job, by mounting a motor ( out of an Audi) in the space, and running a band to the window mechanism. I have seen this done on the front windows, but wasnt very impressed with the quality of the window action.

f far easier way to add electric windows would be to use a kit. cant remember who does them but will look them up. the kit adds behind the pannel and uses a gear mechanism which attaches to the winder handel there is a small cover over the winder stem, this means the hole is covered so no pannel repairs needed.
the result looks similar to the fords when they were fitted with dealer option electric windows

Those kits lookilike they are just for the front doors. EuroCarparts sell a good kit for the front two doors, that I fitted last year. It was a bit fiddly, but nice and robust. I am still unaware of an official kit for the rear windows though.

according to the website for euro car parts they fit both front and rear.
adam have you actually tried to fit them in the rear as i cannot see any reason why they would not work. if you have tried them then please let us know as i was planning to fit electric windows all round in my golf.
thanks.
ps. dino the page on euro. they cost less than the one i found earlier

The Front window is actually an entire replacement mechanism and motor, for the manual set up, and would not physically fit into the rear window housing. I enquired at several motor spares outlets when I was looking to replace my manual windows, and they all stated that there was no rear kit available. One VW modifier informed me about the Audi motor/band method, but I wasnt entirely convinced with it. I think it may state it for rear as the motor would be universal, but the mechanism would be front/rear specific.

Having a look at one of the previous links, the electric window kit looks similar in function to the method I have seen for rear windows. I just prefered to use something that would have a mechanism similar in design to the original, purely for strength and reliabilty. I think that the mechanism shown in the link would perform the job, but may just have a lesser proffesional feel to it. It looks as though it may fit into the rear window housing, but may require some minor mods to mount the motor to the body.

i admit they may not look very strong but for me personally i like the fact i do not have to do much modifying and it could go back to original if i wished.
although if i could find someone to convert my car to power steering i would be happy as i find it really hard to park as it is.

Hi carrie, I was told that I could put power steering on my cab quite easy. I wouldn't know how to do it myself but I was deffo told that it can be done.
......now officially dubless.
