newbie requiring helpful advice

hi all


not got a veedub at mo, carless due to selling my last motor beginning of last week


been offered a gti 8v mk2

has no stereo or speakers, so if anyone has some kenwood/ sony/ alpine etc might be in the market for some

also says no heating as matrix blew up on him

so i require this forums vast knowledge

is it a big job, easy to do, and has anyone got a check sheet as so do a nut and bolt remove refitment please

also does anyone have a spare heater matrix for a mk2 gti 8v please

local to halifax west yorkshire if at all possible

I hope you got the car cheap as the heater matrix is a dashboard out job. Not difficult, just a pain in the arse.

u dont need to take dash out
its very fiddly job but worth it if u get car cheap enough

the heater matrix is a b!tch of a job i found. i only took the center console out, and the haynes manual (or as i like to refer to it the haynes book of LIES!) didnt mention the two studs that secure the matrix to the bulkhead located on the engine bay side. so i thought that i had to pretty much dissassemble the box to get it to come out. after an hour or two scrambling around in my footwell in 32oc heat, red faced and angry i decided to search the internet for a removal guide. surely enough it told me about the studs.
I found refitting the matrix with these studs in place was impossible, without taking the dash out. so i just screwed them in from the engine bay side. easy.
Also, i stupidly took apart the whole matrix unit, and forgot to fit a flap back in which shuts off supply to the footwell when the screen is selected. now i have one very misty valver and very hot feet.
i might take it all apart again, but only when it gets colder
still id go for it mate.
will probably take you 3hours to do the matrix.

there is an faq on the matrix swap, its pretty good but I always take the dash out now when doing the matrixc, it makse the job so much easier.  I've done it both ways

3 hours to remove it maybe, but about 5 hours to refit 

thats what happened to me anyway 

plus i broke one of the studs off the back of the heater box through forcing it back into place (whoops), good old duct tape sorted out the remaining heater box hole though.

i had the same on my driver, except my stud nut kept turning and turningwhen i came to undo, so i just ripped the fecker off the firewall.  The next time I did it everything came undone easy thankfully.  also I forgot to say, dont bother splitting the blower housing from the middle airbox housing, that just adds an extra hours hassle and suffering with those horrible clips.  Simply remove 2 more nuts from the studs on the firewall plus a few more nuts/bolts under dash and take the entire airbox housing off in 1 go, so much easier.

Ahh when i was doing it the site was down so i was a bit stuck. i need to put that flap back in, fancy taking it all apart for me as you seem to be an expert at it?! haha.
yeah it probably too me about 6 hours in all, three of them trying to get the thing out not realising the bolts were attached!
