But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

if you dont mind going 5 stud you can get 288mm hubs from a MK3 VR6, then fit 312mm calipers n carriers off a MK4.  This will probably mean you need to upsize your wheels though, and MK2s generally dont suit anything bigger than 16inch (imo)

for the back you're pretty much stuck with the stock size, afaik the larger rear setups will only go on AWD models.

yep thats the biggest you'll get stickin with 4 stud. You can use the hubs from any 4 stud VW with 256+ brakes (look for a seperate caliper carrier), Corrado/90+ MK2 16v/SEAT ibiza/Passat/Late polo etc etc.

calipers n carriers can be off 5 stud VWs as well as 4, they're the same.  Just make sure they're 280s and not 288s, easy to tell the difference mind, 280s look like this:

288/312:

Givaway is the slider pins with the rubber boots on em. Note that 256 brakes look the same as 280s, just spaced in a bit further!

tbh  there is very little point touching the rear brakes  they don't exactly get hot anyway,  and the harder the fount brakes work  more weight shift  so the bias valve cuts the rears down to bugger all.

if fitting 300 + mm brakes you really need the power to make them work as otherwise  they'll run so cold all the time and the disks will tend to polish up the pads
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

yeah plus id imagine you would want a bigger mc to cope with the piston size?

forgot to mention you need a 16v/g60 22mm master cylinder to run 256/280 front brakes.  No idea what size the MC is on 288/312 tho, 24mm possibly?

You could also look out for some Brembo front calipers found on the ibiza, pretty sure they fit the Golf if they fit the ibiza
