16v blow from manifold - downpipe join
« on: 07 August 2008, 19:51 »
I've got a blow coming from between the manifold and downpipe joint...  but its hard to see exactly whats going on!   wether it is broken or just loose etc...  I can only go by feel rather than sight, it feels like there is some sort of mesh there.   Can anyone shed some light on how these are connected before I start trying to take apart, as the haynes manual doesn't show a lot !!

Thanks
Wilson

there is a gasket between the 2 halves, but doing it in situ is a pain becasue you wont be able to clean up the mating surfaces properly so you might not get a good seal.  also the old gaskets are generally a right mare to get off in 1 piece too!  if its leaking at the actual flexi part then you'll need to get a new downpipe, not a fun job

Im really hoping i dont need a new downpipe...  its really difficult to see where to start while laying on the drive, really need to get it on a ramp.

before I get back under there, can someone explain how to get it apart ?   i'm thinking cause of the heat any bolts are going to be a nightmare anyway !!!

Thanks
Wilson

Threre is 6 bolts, if you remove the top part of the inlet manifold it will be a bit easier to undo them, I absolutely soaked mine with wd40 and they came off ok, you need to be carefull as they can sheer off then u are buggered, dont worry about the flexy bit, use wire wool to try and clean the faces, the wd40 will help clean them with the wire wool, I used some gun gum on the gasket to get a good seal.

As mensioned soak it in penetrating fluid. plus gas is pretty good. Also use impact sockets as they won't round the bolts like normal ones. If you have access to some ramps or pit you can just about squeeze the down pipe out from under the car. Not an easy job though!! Good Luck

you can but you have to get to them from underneath.  I got 5 of them out on my mates car using 3 extension on his breaker bar, the last one I had to use a spanner on, wasnt fun!  3 of em sheared off rather than undoing too.
