New Wiper Blades
« on: 07 August 2008, 16:54 »
Had the car now for about 2 months and am well and truly delighted with it.

I've noticed with all this rain we're having though that the front and rear wipers don't seem to be up to much, as they seem to smear the windscreen and leave a fair bit of grease behind.

I've polished the front and rear screens, which bead water well and look immaculate until I put the wipers on and cleaned the blades, but have come to the conclusion that new blades are required. VW parts have quoted £30.05 for the three which I'm happy with.

Just thought I'd check if there are any better alternatives to VW wiper blades before I pick up the new ones.

I did a search for this, but didn't find anything particularly useful.

Cheers

Supposedly aero wipers are quite good. Not sure how they rank up against VW blades.

My front wiper blades are about the only thing that I don;t like on the car.. Pain in the arse, as they squeak, smear and generally make a racket, especailly when they judder.. I've even replaced them with a new set only for nothing to change..

Im surprised you have an issue after only two months  I've gotta say mine are still spot on after 6 months and the ones on my previous GTI were still good after 15

Mine are fine after 18 months, you can stop the judddder by bending the blade arm! Make the wiper blade 90 degrees to the screen  hope this may help!

give your blades a wipe down with Vinegar, gets rid of the smearing and quite possible save you buying new ones premiturly.

I should point out that I bought it used, it's a 56 plate.

I'll give the blades a wipe with vinegar and see what that does, I just wondered if there was a better alternative to VW blades. If not, then I'll just go with them.

anyone any idea of the costs of a new rear one? mine judders and makes a racket when in use...though will try the old vinegar trick first. Reckon it wont have been changed in 3 years, its probably needing replacement though.

I have had this on Both my MK4 And MK5.  Found the problem to be polish or rainx on windcreen (after buying lots of diffrent sets of wiper blades :embarassed:).  So have stopped putting stuff on windscreen and now is all ok.

vinegar and newspaper on the windscreen

the smearing is just wax which has been deposited on there...

only way to solve it properly is not to wash or wax the car and use the wipers loads !
