have you tried the Haynes manuals for the Golf/GTI? Reasonably priced as well.

It's shyte - typical Haynes crap, often omitting some important points, and blatantly instructing to use petroleum based copper grease on rubber brake components.

Tried to remove the rear disks yesterday, no luck and gave up and painted them in place. Looks better than it did when it was rusty. Going to try take off the fronts if I can find a guide.

To download the docs you need to right click on the link and select save as (also must use Internet Explorer not Firefox)

I undid the disk/rotor screw, but couldn't get the disk/rotor off, do you have to give it a slap with a mallet or something? Mine didnt come off on either back wheel.

Not tried it myself yet on the Golf but would expect it needs a bit of force to detach it from the hub after being on there for a while with the constant temp changes and pressure from the wheel.

Do you have any pics and what paint did you use?

Yup, as SteveP states, right click > save target as.  Save it to a convenient folder on your hard disk, then once youv'e downloaded them, they are there to stay, even if the host site goes down - and we all know that can happen, don't we <cough> jv <cough>

As well as removing the sliding part of the caliper (which contains the piston), you also need to remove the caliper carrier from the hub carrier, before removing the disc.  This is standard practice for virtually all disc brakes with sliding calipers.  When you do remove the carrier, it is very important to clean up the bolt threads with a wire brush, AND use a thread locking compound, such as PermaBond A130 or Loctite 2701.  A wee dab on the sliding pin bolts is also good practice.
