i had my fingers burned before, car had loads of history, but oh boy did it had flywheel and clutch problems, anti roll bar bushes worn out, and suspention ,steering rack and a couple of cv joints all worn out because of the high mileage on an 04 Motor which was 15 months only and 80k on it. Dont be fooled, you must look very carefully, theres more to just a regular serviced engine. Theres alot more to it.

I did 84k in a 1.8T with nothing like you listed needing doing - brakes, exhaust but apart from that it was fine, my mates now been running it for over a year and its still fine - its down to how its been used, not all will be good obviously.

....Don't the AA do a very thorough check for about £50? Could be worth it on a car you're serious about.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I am still waiting for the dealers to get back to me but I am pleased to see a mkV that's within my price range so if I don't get this motor, then I am sure it wont be to long before I get my dream car.

The annoying, ridiculous and irritating thing is that if I took my 05(55) top spec, leather, satnav, xenons, highline, mfsw, cruise, sunroof, winter, lux, r32 wheels, side skirts, colour coded and milltek'd DSG with 28k on the clock into a stealership they would probably not offer me much more than your target...ok I am hoping that I would at least get £13.5k...but who would bet against one of these blood suckers offering me £10.5k?

Has anyone tried to trade in their 05 GTI's recently? if so what did the scumbags offer you? For a laugh I may do so soon and report my findings.

I do hope my venom is misplaced and that VW dealers see the value in ensuring that sellers feel that their car has retained a reasonable amount of value over a 3 year period....else we would all go and buy Korean wouldn't we

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

....I think we all have to accept that every new car drops significantly in value the moment it leaves the showroom. Nothing new about that and whatever mods we have doesn't make any difference.

A guy who's a member on my "home club" has an 06 Gti in silver with between 80-90k on the clock FVWSH and I think he's asking 9.5k for it so that one isnt far away for a dealer to be asking that for it.

I don't see any problem with a car having high miles providing it's been well looked after and being honest I'd rather have a car thats done 80k motorway miles rather than 40k round the doors.less wear and tear on the mechanicals cruising IMO.
Mr Pea's ?

If I was looking at a car with that mileage I would get an independent VW specialist to have a "proper" look at it and see what they think.

My sister has just bought an Audi TT (shes popping over with it in a sec actually :), all very exciting, she went all out for the 225) which has done 70k and she had an Audi guy look at it, found £600 worth of work that needed doing on it (rear anti roll which is common on the TTs and wishbone to name a few things). These are things which I certainly would never have found. Managed to knock a good load off the price and is getting the work done. I really think its better safe than sorry and shelling out a bit to get someone who really knows what their doing to have a look.

All in imo of course.

:edit: She has just left, its loooovely. She actually let me drive it aswell which I cant believe. Never driven one before, its a very stiff car with stiff clutch and brake and gear change, think I might just be getting to used to the comfy Golf. Its got a nice kick which is pretty much the same and it seems just as fast as the Golf even with its 25bhp advantage, dont know if its me or not but there seemed to be much more lag in the TT than the GTi. Either way its a lovely car and I'm chuffed for her. Going to have to get her round to making some mods to it, have no idea what to do to a TT, ideas?

....Hi Alan - re modding sister's TT, speak to Ed at APS: 01280 840491 www.autops.co.uk and do say I recommended you (Robin with red Mk5 GTI). I know lots of people including a lady TT driver who have had Audi's and R32's modded there. They are the cream of what used to be AmD when they were good.
