Edition 30 - Bluetooth Phone and Ipod Prep
« on: 04 August 2008, 13:43 »
Hi guys, Im new on this forum, so appologies if this has been discussed countless times before!

Basically I have an 08 plate edition 30 gti. It has the touch screen sat nav with 6 cd in the centre arm rest and multifunction steering wheel (which has a phone button on it). Id like to upgrade to have an ipod either in the armrest or in the glove box. I got a price from VW for the replacement ipod connection in the armrest and it was £250 for the part alone!!!! plus ive since read on forums that you cant actually control your full playlists from the head unit! Which is quite frankly a waste of time.

So are there any other options available that would allow you to control full playlists from the Head unit?

On the bluetooth phone front, Id like to avoid installing a Parrot if possible as I hate clutter on the dash. Ive found this link from a thread:
http://www.octavia-vrs.com/technical/bluetooth.html

Has anyone else installed this in their GTI? It looks very complex!?!? Or are there other options to consider?

Many thanks for any help

Im based in West Yorkshire, so if anyone can recommend good auto electrical installers locally to carry out any work that would be great, its not something id want to attempt myself.

Cheers
Dan

Firstly hello and welcome.

The bluetooth link is from a guy who is a member of this forum (vrStu), he supplied and fitted the kit on my car, I can highly recommend him. With the RNS-510 and MFSW this will work very well (i.e. Control via either the touchscreen or the MFSW and Highline display).

On the ipod front I would try either: -

Updated VW version (not the one your dealer will be offering, this one allows full touchscreen direct track access) -

Or aftermarket (control via the Highline display and MFSW) -  http://www.dension.com/GW100.php

I've got the factory Sat Nav (MFD2) with the iPod connector and as you say, you can not display artists/albums/tracks, only the playlists you programme in the iPod which are numbered 1 - 6 in the unit (1 - 5 for individual artists/albums and 6 for the whole iPod content). Agree it's poor and a bit of a bummer. As far as the RNS510 Sat Nav unit is concerned, you may be able to download software to give you a speed camera database but with some functionality missing (audio warning). Try looking here for further info:

I'm ordering the OEM Bluetooth kit from Stu this week as I prefer the clean factory fit look. PM Stu and he may even be able to assist with the install :undecided:

I'm sure some others on the forum have done the install with no problems. No doubt they will post in response. You do need access to a VAG.com to code the unit to the ECU. I'm sure you will get more info if you search further on the forum:

It rocks and is by far the best method in the Golf.

Thanks to everyone for their info. Steve, that KUFATEC unit looks like the monkey Im after! If it replaces the cd changer in the arm rest than thats the option I wanted and if it shows track info on the head unit then even better!!!

I could do with finding out a bit more info on the Bluetooth kit that Stu offers. Coding ECU's etc is starting to freek me out! :-) Does it invalidate warranties?

Has anyone got any contact details for stuVRS? Ive tried to find a PM or email btn on this forum but there does seem to be one.

Has everyone fitted these units themselves? Ive noticed Steve, you said you had done yours yourself. CocoPops did you fit yours?

Dan

The bluetooth kit vrStu is selling use VAG parts so I can't see any reason why it would affect the warranty unless it maulfactioned and damaged another part (which is not difference to any other type of car kit, if anything I think this is probably the safer option).

VrStu Installed mine, the coding is the reason I went down to see him to get it installed but as you are a quite a bit further north thats probably not a practical option.

To contact him PM him on here (but you will need to have 10 posts first) or just click on the contact me button on the top of the bluetooth install page on his website.

Sorry to hijack the thread but does the OEM bluetooth work without Sat Nav?
