GTi vs 911
« on: 02 August 2008, 12:16 »
Okay chaps.

Sat in a 911 as a passenger for the first time last weekend. Don't quote me on what it was but it was something like a Carrera 4S?

Can't say I was particularly impressed. Nicely built and everything but left me feeling a bit cold. Thought it was bland.

Like having engines on a roller skate!

I certainly wouldn't pay 50k+ for one.

Golf GTi all the way!

What do others think?

M

Sorry but completely disagree here - the GTI is a very nice and accomplished all round car but the 911 is a superb sports supercar.

No comparison at all - you'd know that of you've owned or used one as a daily driver. Great performance and driving experience with an outstanding engine note. Different class and completely different driving experience - as all Porsches.

IMHO, of course

....Have driven a 911 Targa when working in Spain many decades ago! More recently driven a friend's Boxster S and found it no faster than my GTI but a glorious soundtrack and superbly finished and designed. I'd much rather buy a 'previously used' Porsche than a new Audi TT or any other 2-seater.

Also, this one : -

Slightly off track, so apologies, but what are your opinions of the SLK 280 and 350. You guys make valid points for and against which sometimes can be quite useful!

SLK = (successful) hairdresser's car.

Build quality on a par with a favourite German hatchback of mine, but very overpriced.

fine for cruising, but a croc of sh!te if you want to press on, compared to a Boxster S.  AMG55 SLK is another matter, but not in the same price range.  If I had that amount of spare cash for a car, it would be the Carrera 4S all the way...

To cap it off even more over here in Dubai - for the same price as a new SLK 200 Kompressor hairdryer, you can buy a new Boxster S with lots of bells and whistles....

Thanks Phil!
It will mainly be a daily driver, then used twice a year for around 2k mile tours of Europe. Its narrower than the Boxster, which I also test drove and just didnt likeĀ  and being narrow where we live saves the wheels from kerb rash. Plus having a metal roof makes it safer to leave anywhere, great build quality and 5.4 0 - 62 for the 350....

Oh and I test drove the 200, the GTI would eat it for breakfast, hence the 350 idea. AMG kit possibly, but the 55's outta my price range.

Lol

Just my opinion, Newgolf!

Prices are a bit more equal in the UK, but over here it's a bit of a no brainer - BMW 320i, Mercedes C class with a 2 litre 4 pot, SLK 200, or Boxster S with all the extras on for the same price....

Hence I've got something coming from Porsche in a couple of month as a weekend car!

Good opinion though, its good to hear what other peoples views are first as its a lot of money to spend on a car without looking into it properly.

Other choices were, but ruled out by her ladyship for various reasons..

A3 convertible, very disapointing, small boot and lots of scuttle shake.
Mini Convertible, no chance, awful to drive.
Porsche Boxster, too wide. Didnt like the bland interior.
TT, not bad but only available FWD which she has a problem with in the wet after having an AWD S4
TTS, better to drive but too much "in your face" with the extra body styling and stands out too much (so I'm told)

Her words, not mine. "It has to be German, look good, not wheelspin off the line in the wet, and sound good too, oh and be red, black or silver. Oh and have heated front seats, Xenons, traction control, leather and look like its expensive. Oh and convertible".

One of the down sides of having a "high maintenance" wife it seems...
