went to 2 mechanics. one said that the engine is tired, which is bulls**t because its done 150k on the clock with full service history and the other said something about the power steering.

Listen carefully to the ticking sound and try to determin the speed. Is it regular and about half engine speed? If so it could be a hydraulic tappet getting lazy. If it is more like a heavy knocking sound coming from the depths of the engine, then you may have big end bearing issues. Check the oil level, or even give it an oil change to see if that makes a difference.

Just a thought... Check the cars history for when a cam belt & tensioner change was last done - Perhaps the tensioner pulley is worn?

the power steering belt, fan belt, cam belt tensioner stud, cam belt tensioner and the cam belt were all done back in last december.

i'd take a guess at something like cambelt tensioner and cambelt. Check the cambelt isnt hitting the plastic cam cover or the metal sheet on the other side. Im telling you cos i had it before.

I'd say thats a tappet failure by all accounts. 150,000 is about the time they start to die. Oil change will definately help this quiet down.

Could be a lairy injector, I had to replace one of mine because it got that loud!  Speaking of injectors, does anyone know what colour should be on the 1.8 diji?  I have a mk3 block and I have yellow... sure this isnt standard??
