I got my AEX engine out of the golf yesturday and stripped it down today.  It had a knocking piston and was rarther expecting to find damage to the cylinder wall but its all perfect,  the piston rattles slightly in the bore which is normal but this one does do it a bit to much. thousands of miles left in it yet so im going to overhall it  with a new piston and put it back together then either sell it or put it in my 1.8,  seing as its faster and its a 1.4   but first im going to do some serious mods to the top end!   A freind of mine will port and polish it cheep so will be interesting to see how it goes.

Anyway there was actualy a point to this post..   Seing as the piston has been rattling from side to side for the past 20k miles should i hone the cylinder walls?  and if i do that does it need diffrent piston rings or normal ones?   either way i will be replacing them so its no problem.

Oh and one more question,   I have stripped it down to just the cylinder block but i cant take the bottom end out untill the oil pump is out of the way, but to do that i need to take the crank sprocket off,  how do i lock the engine up coz its F**kin TIGHT!!!

cheers.

You either need the vag flywheel locking tool, or remove the starter motor and insert a strong lever between the teeth and the transmission bellhousing. Best to get someone else to hold this whilst you slacken the sprocket bolt.

Oh i have got it in to many bits for that, there is no gearbox or anything on the engine.  I guess i should have thought about this before i stripped it down

And this is my freshly build up cylinder head

Oops, perhaps try an impact wrench, if you cant borrow one try and find a local garage who will use theirs if you can get the block to them.
I wouldn't try to hold the sprocket itself you might damage the teeth which will damage any new belt you put on it.

I have tryed my inpact wrench which is a pretty hefty one but i think even if it was powerfull enough the movment in the shaft takes up the hammering action,  I have a big ass one for HGVs at work i will have to try but still im not sure if it will work.   Very frustrating!  I will have a go on friday.
