Had a HIIIIIDEOUS scare whilst we were away...
« on: 30 July 2008, 00:04 »
Well since we last spoke, I had a bit of a brown trouser moment last week that I thought i'd share..
Basically I was driving up the A1 about 6am and noticed my shirt had come untucked at the back of my trousers. So 'as ya do' lifted my ass up off the seat momentarily to tuck it back in which was easy enough, but whilst doing it, I knocked the ignition key with my right knee in to the off position...... OH.........................sh!t!!!

Being in 'D' (DSG) the car basically started to grind to a hault (literally like a emergency stop) and before I had realised what had happened and could turn the key back, it was all over and I was now sat in the middle of the carridgeway trying to start the bloody thing again as quick as poss. The car behind me which intially was someway back, was now getting closer and closer (obviously wasn't expecting some tit with an untucked shirt to be sat in the middle of the A1), not realising i'd stopped, as I don't think my brake lights would of come on. Just as I thought 'see ya Golf', she somehow managed to squeeze inbetween me and the central reservation and stop safley..    PH-FOOKING-EW
After all the saga was finished we both pulled into the layby and I apologised profusely and briefly explained the situation to her and we both went on our ways.. Can't thank her enough for missing me..
Anyway, since the event, my car has been working fine and nothing seems out of the ordinary. But I can't help but think that the car/gearbox etc must of taken some hammer after the gearbox basically locking up at 60mph.. Can anyone give any technical assurance???  I was thinking about going to my dealer and explaing what happened, but thought i'd get some advise from you chaps first..
Anyway waffle over and I can certainly guarantee if my shirt comes untucked whilst driving again, it'll be fooking staying untucked until I pull up..

IMO dont tell the dealer, as if it does fcuk later on they will says its your fault and the warranty doesnt cover you.

Im sure there is some kind of safety built into the DSG box, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Just be thankful it all still works!

First time iv'e heared of that happening,  I know in America a few of them have been putting theDSG in neutral and cruising up to lights to try and save a few pennies  causing long term damage if done continuosly.
I think though your situation would have probably been thought about when testing the durability of these boxes im sure they would have built in some safety device, you cant take the key out in mine unless in park so they appear to have been covering the bases.
My GUESS is that it would be the same as launch control, brakes applied thus disengaging the clutch or what ever it does to hold it there with out damage ithink it would have thrown a fault up if any damage had been done teutonic tamer is the man for the definitive answer.
By the rate your modifying Ben you will be stage 3 twin turbo by christmas anyway so your gearbox is going to have a hard life any how

Ouch!

Sounds like you need a clean pair of undies after a near miss like that Ben.

I wouldn't worry too much about the DSG. It will take more than a brief stop in gear to hurt it
The main thing is how you managed to hit the key in the first place AND knock it rotationally to turn it off! The odds of it happening are probably miniscule and the odds of it happening twice - virtually nil

PS - was the woman fit?

LOL...
Can't really remember her being a stunner to be fair.. Was with her fella anyway.. I was more concerned about my car than checking her out (looks over his shoulder to see if the Mrs is in the room)..
Besides which there was the odour of cacked pants roaming the air, so don't think she was interested...
