....The Mk5 GTI is well known for drinking oil in her first few thousand miles/km. Don't worry too much - She'll settle down. She's a bit of a slapper....Likes to have a drink to get herself going!
mine must be broke as its not drank anything !

....But don't let her get as dry as a nun's nasty!!

i wont, but from the dipstick alone it doesnt appear to have moved, perhaps i sealed the rings properly

ps at what stage does the oil light come on ?

The oil light comes on when the dipstick level is just on the last few mm. Well below the minimum level for topping up.

I've only once had to top up between services and that was with about 1/2 a litre after 5 k miles. The advice you got on topping up seems way, waaaay over the top.

VAGCOM tells you your current level in mm and the warning level - which I 'think' was 47mm but dont hold me on that, I was browsing through the different blocks the other day and noticed it - could be useful

Mine used about 4 top up tubs in the first 14k miles, which i put down to dsg redlineing it often if you stamp on the gas. when driven on the paddles and not quite reving the nuts off it, it uses less oil. Is yours a dsg?

Hi neg,

This reading was down as a 'warning level' so if it hits this the warning light illuminates - which could be just below the dipstick min reading -

I think mine was reading about 58mm (on idle) and I topped it up the other day.

These numbers are from memory, I'll double check when I plug it in again.

Manufacturer limits are always silly so that you cannot claim on anything but a 'due to expire' engine
Should run a E39 M5, now they use oil as much as fuel and its normal

Sounds like the dealer underfilled in the service , esp if you never saw the light before.
Obv check for serious leaks too!

Using oil (esp during running in) is not a bad thing , I guess its changing oil usage habits you should worry about.
I ran mine in 'vigorously' and expected some usage but its been next to nothing so far. (8k)

Let it warm up , thrash it , and check regularly

Rang Volkswagen direct today to query oil consumption. Their technical dept told me the GTI will use around 1 ltr oil per 621 miles! I tried to book car in at National tyres as they were advertising oil (castrol edge) and filter change for under £30. I couldn't even buy the oil for that! Unfortunately, The most annoying stroppy employee of National refused to do my car (something to do with unable to get an oil filter). He also tried to say I'd need VW oil, and when I explained castrol edge was suitable, he basically called me a liar. I was told to go to Halfords and not to bother them! Anyway, off to Halfords to part with £44!
