steam coming out - oil cap
« on: 22 May 2008, 08:17 »
hi

i have just recently joined the forum....great to be here !

i have been checking the engine oil levels after using my car & i can see some steam coming out of it when i open the oil cap.

also i have been regularly checking the oil levels and the oil at the dipstick is clean i mean its not dark or with any cr*p like that etc...

now is this steam coming out is normal or is this a problem with the engine???

thanks in advance for your replies.....

cheers...

Steam would indicate water in your oil, which you don't want. You sure it's not just oil vapour?

hi

thanks for the reply...

i think its the oil vapour, also i have been checking the oil level (obviously on a flat surface with engine being cooled say 3hrs) and the level its right on top of the chequered area of the dip stick. so its not burning oil i guess.

do you think when the engine is warm the oil will have vapour just like in the kitchen when frying stuff you can see the oil surface does have steam !

pretty sure i dont have water in oil coz i just changed the oil n filter 2 weeks ago

I'd say it was oil vapour, you don't say if you have checked the oil when the car is cold? If there was a leak you would possibly have oil residue in the water expantion tank.
