Something of interest maybe here,

Just picked a copy of the Autocar test review, and it seems they bench tested the Scirocco against an Ed30 and not a regular GTi judging by the photo's of the 2 cars together?

Also spoke to my dealer the other day and they reckon they have been told the 2.0 TSI will be badged GT and the other engines will not. Therefore we could see and R or GTi as per the current mk5 Golf line up.

You won't see a GTI Scirocco. VW know that would take sales away from the Golf.

I doubt we will ever see another small R car either. With the current legislation and costs involved in taxing a new car not to mention getting bent over every time you fill up, the economics and customer group simpy don't work. I'd say the Mk5 R is the last one we'll see. From here on in its going to be small displacement forced induction for performance cars. There is even a rumbling the next M3 is going to be 4 pot 2L developed from touring car and F1 tech

....Subject to seeing the new scirocco in the flesh, I don't like it! Looks like a cross between a Renault and a Peugeot. It can't compete with a Golf as an allrounder because of 3-door, restricted rear seats and tiny boot. I'd rather go for the new Mitsu EVO X.

Well I didn't like the old one, and after thinking long and hard I've decided I dont like this one either.

It doesn't look right IMO, and there are plenty other VAG designs that do the just the same thing already.

I'm holding out for the Mk6

Robin, you wont wanna evo 10, the boot in that car has a subwoofer that takes up half the floor space, leaving enough room for 4 shopping bags. i looked at one when i collected phyllis from a evo dealer.

Not following you on this one.

Assuming the Golf mk6 comes out in September to order for late year early 09 deliveries, we won't then see a mk6 GTi until at least Sept 09 or later, leaving a door open in the range. And from what we read, and see from Spy Shots the mk6 will be slightly bigger and roomier than the current mk5, and VW has also stated that the Scirocco will for now be the sportiest car it produces.

I'm sure we will see a mk6 GTi, why stop the heritage and cash cow, but it would have to be super special to take something off the Scirocoo IMO. A lot of people have mentioned that this car dilutes the brand and oversteps each other, but if the Golf Mk6 is a bigger car, then both could compete in the same market easily.

Also as per R models, why then do Lambo and Ferrari sell more models today than they have in the last few years? If you are going to buy any performance related car, you buy it with the running costs, simple as. I race cars and its expensive, but its my love, so it does not stop me, even if it does cripple the wallet from time to time. I think the push to have a 2.0 4 pot blown R model is a good step forward, the CO2 and mpg arn't too bad in relative terms, and of course the engine is lighter so the bhp does not have to be that high.

Time will tell, but I'm a Scirocco convert.

It looks like a mix between the Volvo and a squashed A3 IMO

I think it looks great, and Im sure its gonna get the ED30 engine at some point , it would be cruel not to...
not to mention an R version ....

At the price it is , unless you need the practicality of the Golf , its a no brainer.
And with some nice mods its going to be stunning.
