Fitting suspension - front top mount?
« on: 20 May 2008, 12:46 »
I have been tryin g to fit my new springs and shocks to my mk3 and have come across a problem.

I have undone the two bottom bolts, and just need to undue the top mount.

In my haynes and from what I have been told there should be a bolt with 2no. slots in it fixing the strut, but I have a standard 21mm bolt with an 8m alun key fitment to the strut top. Apparently you can get a special tool to take the top nut off from VW.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I am still learning on some things, especially the suspension.

Now I am having difficulty trying to get the nut off as everytime I trun the bolt with my socket, the whole thing is turning, and even when I try to hold an 8mm alun key in to hold the strut firm it jumps thread.

Any help or useful hints with this would be appreicated. Sorry for the crap explaination.

I had the same problem and it was a bi*ch. No way i could get it off. So i drove to quick fit gave the man a fiver to undo them all with the air gun, then done them back up by hand until i got home. The air gun had the quick impact needed to zip them off.

Yeah thought about going to a garage and asking them to take it off with an airgun so looks like thats the solution.

Thanks.
