Yeah I'll definatly either declare them or put the origionals back on - I've learned twice now how you can be driving along minding your own busniess and suddenly be in an accident through no fault of your own! So it's definatly not worth the risk as far as I'm concerned!

Only thing is I'd actually need to re-buy the alloys! ha ha but I'm sure I can pick up a set on 1/2 decent tyres for not too much!!

my cars got alloys
and on my fiesta it was an extra £200 for alloys on it.
never declared them.. and sold the car- alloys werent that expensive anyway

so if you have some standard alloys. and just put some vw alloys on it- will that need to be declared?

I was wondering that - I wa sthinking if I needed to I could stick my 8v alloys on it just as a kinda stop gap, but would they be considered non-standard on a VR6?

You'll find you should tell them if those particular alloys weren't a standard option for the car they are going on. The one's I've got weren't standard, they would have been an optional extra (well that's what I told the insurers...they came off a MK4 Polo lol). If they are alloys you're proud of and want them covered then I'd suggest you tell them.

Hey Tom,

with us the alloys will usually make little/no difference and in fact as you have found we can often get better deals on modified cars. Yeah you may sometimes find a slightly cheaper deal elsewhere from a more mainstream insurer on a standard car but chances ar you will pay for it if/when you do come to modify the car, still let me know of any cheaper deals you get (preferably with the alloys as we would certainly hope to be cheaper with them declared!)) and i will try and twist the renewals managers arm a bit for you.

Unfortunatly an outstanding claim is likely to count against you though as most insuers consider you guilty until proven innocent

It is possible to buy laid up/fire & theft only cover although the policies we have for this are only for an annual contract and if the car is garaged.

I really hope the Thatcham conversation was not with us ? although HIC do pride themselves on a large % of the staff being car enthusiasts (sadly not ALL into vw's tho as hard as i try to convert them) its just not possible for everyone to be so, although i would expect everyone on the phones to have enough of an understanding to know what you meant with the security
