Speedo not working properly

Hi guys im new to this site and have recently bought a Mk3 GTI 16V. My speedo has started playing up. I drove the car to work the other day and it didn't work at all in the morning. The rev counter, miles clock fuel etc all work fine though. When it came to driving the car home at the end of the day and with the car sat in the blazing heat all day it was all working fine. The same thing happened for a few days untill it stopped working again. Drove the car today and it was working slightly i.e it was speeding up very slowly and was showing that i was doing about 20 MPH when i was clearly going alot faster, any help would be greatly appreciated as i can't be doing with coughing up any cash for camera fines.

it may have just come loose at the back of the clock so if you get bored one day take the dash facia off not sure how simple this is on a mk3 and push the cable back on and make sure its tight? this happened on my mates clio and it solved the problem. Its just a guess though !
